@ FS
Like that last part. Actually got an interesting email from a former 401k manager I keep in contact with. Since you like ratios, I'll see if I can summarize.

He took the 80% rule and was sort of discussing percentages of percentages. Using Soc Ser as the backstop, the point was how the amount needed for retirement dropped off noticeably the more expenses were kept in check. Then pointed to how this increased the odds of having a successful retirement.

$2mil in liquid cash isn't a bad goal. That's $80,000/yr in interest income now... add on SSecurity and ur set for life! Just don't have any debt, and want a new BMW every year.

@ Ryan:

Thanks, appreciate it. I haven't thought of the exact number either, but this came about after playing around with different $1,000,000 calculators. Using the same variables, I got a difference of 8+ yrs.

Agreed. I don't plan to retire and sit around. Looking forward to "retiring" so I can pursue so much more.

Your great uncle Norman sounds like a pretty sweet guy! I haven't given the exact amount of money I need for retirement a thought yet, just save what I can at the moment.

I would like to think that I'd still be active and strong headed when I'm 96 like your great uncle, which means I could probably still even be doing consulting work at that point... Planning for sitting in a nursing home most likely will result in sitting in a nursing home.

Great message and an important one. I am amazed how many posts I have run across detailing how a million or two is plenty to retire. It's in part why I posted the question "if you lived till 130 years?"

I've had more than one say I am crazy for setting my target at $5 million. I think they are crazy for shooting so low!
