Ways to Make Money When You're UnemployedA few years ago, a colleague wrote about some ways for you to make money if you’re unemployed. He discussed selling shoes, selling t-shirts, and other entrepreneurial service. There are tons of ways out there to make money if you get creative. Here are a few more unconventional ways to earn cash if you’re between jobs.

5 Ways to Make Money When You’re Unemployed

1. Temp Service

Signing up with a temp service is a great way to make when when you’re unemployed. These agencies place people with companies who need temporary help filling positions. They types of jobs vary based on your skills, but the good news is that you have money coming in almost immediately. Most of the jobs only last for a few weeks, hence the name “temp.” However, if you perform well on the job, employers may decide to bring you on full-time. There are a lot of temp agencies out there, with Randstad and Staffmark among the most popular. A quick Google search can direct you to temp agencies in your local area.

2. Freelancing

Freelancing is another means to pay the bills. If you have a specialized skill, reach out to see if you have friends, family, or other connections in need of your services. Some examples of freelance jobs are consulting, photography, blogging, travel writing, web design, graphic design, and IT repair. As with any job, the more you put into it, the more it pays off.

If you focus on building your freelancing contracts, you could turn it into a new business opportunity. And who knows, you could even make more money from it than your previous full-time job. Some people who started freelancing are now making thousands of dollars per month. Yes, I said thousands per month! What’s stopping you from doing the same thing?

3. Teaching English

There is a huge demand to learn the English language. People from around the world are actively seeking English teachers to help them improve their language skills for business, education, and travel. And the best part, most of these jobs pay very well. You can usually expect $20-$25 an hour with the right qualifications.

Although most ESL jobs require you to move overseas, there are also many new online opportunities thanks to COVID-19. While you can still apply with a recruiting agency to place you in a foreign country, there are also online companies that host a platform where you can connect with students. Since most students are based in Asia, it means you might be working some odd hours. But, if you are currently not working, teaching English is a good way to make money when you’re unemployed. Not only will it put money in your pocket, but also expand your resume and comfort zone at the same time.

4. Online Surveys

Completing online surveys is another way to make extra cash. I’ve done this before in my spare time and made a decent amount of money for the time I was putting into it. If you set aside time to do them every day, you could make a few hundred dollars each week. However, every survey company is different. When completing them, make sure that you read all the instructions before you start. You don’t want to waste time on lengthy surveys if they don’t pay well. Start with companies like Swagbucks, Inbox Dollars, Amazon Mechanical Turk and Opinion Outpost if you are interested to earn money from online surveys.

5. Selling Blood Plasma

Another well-known source of income for the unemployed is by selling plasma. With recent shortages due to the pandemic, donation centers are paying even more money for blood plasma. In addition to the $20-$50 each visit, you will also receive a bonus after completing multiple successful donations. In the past, local facilities paid $300-$500 after completing your eighth donation. Now, I have seen incentives up to $1,000 for selling plasma.

While these may be great suggestions to make it through the month, some could potentially become steady sources of income. If you have a particular skill or expertise, start looking for opportunities to put your knowledge to good use. With a little creativity and networking, you could find yourself on an entirely new career path.
