Times are constantly changing, and it almost feels like we can’t keep up with the fast-paced changes happening all the time. For better or for worse, several things used to be socially unacceptable by most standards but are normal today.
Read on to learn more about these things and the ever-changing world we live in today.
Women Wearing Pants
It may shock you to learn that it only became socially accepted for women to wear pants in the early 1900s. Can you imagine a world where it was completely unacceptable for women to wear anything other than a dress or a skirt?
Childbirth Outside of Wedlock
Nowadays, there are lots of people who have children outside of wedlock, and it’s becoming more and more of an everyday occurrence. Back in the day, it was considered sinful to even have sexual affairs outside of wedlock.
Some countries in Europe, like Portugal, France, and the Netherlands, have more babies outside of wedlock than in marriage. Times have changed a lot!
Interracial Marriage
Today, interracial marriage is completely legal thanks to “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” from the UN which was instated in 1948. However, before this time, interracial relationships weren’t an openly occurring thing to see, let alone talk about.
Financially Independent Women
Before women’s empowerment, women were not allowed to have their bank accounts or even take out loans to buy houses. They had to have a husband or father cosigning these contracts because, technically, they were deemed the property of the men in their lives.
Tattoos
For a long time, tattoos were viewed with complete disdain, whereas nowadays, almost every Tom, Dick, and Harry below 25 years of age has at least one tattoo. A lot of folks don’t even hide their tattoos anymore, and they are mostly worn with pride and confidence.
Openly Talking About Mental Health
Nowadays, people will openly tell you if they are struggling with mental health issues, whereas before, this was never spoken about, let alone dealt with, or even acknowledged.
Wearing Casual Wear on a Plane
When airplanes first started operating commercially, you were pretty much expected to be dressed to the 9s if you were a passenger on a plane. Nowadays, you can almost wear whatever you want, and no one will even bat an eye. (And thanks to goodness for that!)
Telling Elders They Are Wrong
Back in the day, elders had to be respected no matter what. If you told an older person that they were wrong, it would be considered highly disrespectful and borderline blasphemous. Times have changed a lot with the way that youngsters and the older generations interact with one another.
Being Part of or Supporting the LGBTQ+ Community
Back in the day, if you were gay, you were either considered to have a mental illness or a criminal. This is perhaps still the case in many countries around the world, but today, a lot of Western countries have accepted LGBTQ+ notions, and gay marriage is legal in certain places around the world.
