15 Things That Have Not Only Gotten Worse But Also More Expensive at the Same Time

Published:

The only thing you can count on is change. Things change often, but often, these aren’t good changes. Recently, it seems like everything is getting more and more expensive. Everyone is complaining about the prices of things that are just going up and up. To add insult to injury, item quality isn’t improving.

Some things have gotten more expensive while declining in quality. It seems unfair when it happens, but that doesn’t stop it from happening.

Things are getting worse even though people have to spend more money on them. The quality is going down while the prices are going up. Why is that fair? It’s not, but it’s life. Here are some of the things that are just getting worse but also more expensive at the same time.

Cable TV

All the best shows and movies are on streaming and pay channels. Cable TV is something that many consider to be old-fashioned, but many still have it. It’s far more expensive than it was just a few years ago, and the entertainment selections aren’t great.

The costs of various insurance types have skyrocketed in the last few years. People feel the pinch when paying for their home, life, health, auto, and other insurance policies. The quality is also noticeably going down with higher deductibles despite the higher prices.

Dollar Menus

The dollar menus that were once such a staple of many people’s diets are largely gone as prices have risen. At the same time, the food that was once so cheap has also gotten smaller so that profits are larger.

Netflix

The cost of Netflix was practically negligible for a long time. Then, it suddenly started to go up. The price is through the roof for most plans, and the streamer has stopped making as many original shows as they used to. More and more people are wondering whether it’s worth the price.

Candy Bars

The price of candy bars has also got sky-high in the last couple of years. At the same time, the sizes have gotten smaller. Getting a candy bar today is an exercise in futility.

Appliances

Another industry that has made serious price hikes is the appliance industry. Along with the higher prices, the quality of the construction has gone down. It’s part of the planned obsolescence of these machines that makes you need to buy a new one sooner.

Rents

The rise in rents has been making headlines, and for good reason. The price of a rental has gone up so fast that people are struggling to pay for anything else. At the same time, many buildings aren’t being well taken care of. Landlords know housing is hard to find, and they may spend less time and money on their rental units because of it.

Tipping

The standard tip used to be from 10 to 15%, and the number of people you had to tip was quite low. Today, 20 to 25% is expected, and that’s for virtually everyone you come into contact with at a business. At the same time, service is worse because of understaffing.

Restaurant Meals

Staffing problems are particularly bad at restaurants, leading to servers who are stretched too thin. While this is happening, the prices of restaurant meals have gone straight up. The prices are ridiculous, even at very low-end restaurants.

Sticker shock used to be a term relegated to car buying, but it’s now found at the grocery store. Many people report that their grocery prices go up nearly every time they buy food. And, companies are engaged in “shrinkflation”. This is when they shrink the food itself for higher profits.

Like most things these days, the cost of seeing a movie has gone up. At the same time, there aren’t very many movies that people want to see in theaters. Most of the best entertainment is on streaming services today. Movie studios are baffled as to why no one is showing up.
