In Yuxian, splashing molten iron against cold brick walls during the Chinese New Year is a tradition spanning 500 years. Known as Dashuhua, it creates a firework-like spectacle. Vendors come together to make the event a shopping extravaganza with a unique fiery backdrop!
2) Haggling in the Souks – Morocco
Fixed prices rarely exist in Moroccan markets or Souks. Bargaining is an expected and respected practice in Morocco. According to Julianna Marshall, a travel expert at the International Drivers Association, “Bargaining is a ritual, a dance of sorts, in the spiced-scented air of the Souks. It isn’t merely about the price. It’s a civilized volley of banter, a chance to connect, even if briefly, with the merchant.”
3) ‘Aisheh Fee Misr’ – Egypt
Egypt has a tradition where everything is virtually free for the shopper on the opening day of any new store. This ritual, known as ‘Aisheh Fee Misr’ (Living in Egypt) symbolizes good luck and fortune.
4) North American Black Friday Madness
The day following Thanksgiving in North America (mostly the USA and Canada) is marked as the beginning of Christmas shopping. Retailers frequently open very early, offering promotional sales that often result in chaotic scenes of hordes of deal-hunting shoppers.
5) Mitsukoshi Store Lion Dance – Japan
At the Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo, every opening ceremony includes a ceremonial Lion Dance to ward off evil spirits and bring prosperity and luck to the store.
6) The Shillong Teer Betting – India
In the Indian city of Shillong, thousands gather every day at teer (an indigenous archery game) stalls not just to witness the sport but to participate in the unique gambling ritual that accompanies it. People place bets on the last two digits of the total number of arrows that hit the target, creating a dynamic marketplace in the process.
7) Advancement in E-Commerce – South Korea
South Korea has revolutionized the shopping experience by integrating QR codes into public spaces. Citizens can ‘shop’ at virtual grocery stores while waiting for subway trains by scanning product QR codes and completing the transaction on their phones.
8) Midnight Shopping Festival – Dubai
Dubai, infamous for its grandeur, honors the holy Islamic month of Ramadan in its distinctive style. Their annual shopping festival generally begins at 7 PM and extends till midnight or even beyond for 30 straight nights.
9) Prices at AED4 – UAE
Across various stores in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), many products are slashed to a flat rate of AED4 (approximately USD1) once or twice every week to boost the economy and consumer spending.
10) Regifting Tradition – Russia
A somewhat controversial practice found in Russian culture is the ‘otkat’ or regifting. Here, it’s socially acceptable to give away gifts that one has received earlier, even if the original gift-givers are present.
