6 Practical Strategies for Saving by Living Sustainably

Published:

Changing your life into a more sustainable one may seem like a daunting task at first. However, by taking just one step at a time, you may find that it’s not as difficult to implement as you may have once thought.

The good thing about living a more sustainable life is that you may even be able to save some extra money each month. Here, we’ll cover some strategies that you could implement to live a more eco-friendly life and hopefully save some money, too.

Switch Baths to Showers and Reduce Shower Time

Reducing shower time or switching from taking long, hot, steamy baths to brief and effective showers is a great step towards living more sustainably, especially since most of us usually shower or bath daily.

This will reduce your water usage, which is not only a great way to save the environment but will also reduce energy usage, which will save you some extra money each month.

Switch to Energy Saving Appliances

When shopping for a new home appliance, such as a tumble dryer or a dishwashing machine, you could benefit by going for an appliance that has been energy-efficient certified. These appliances have been engineered with technology that makes them far more efficient, and at times, they may use up to 50% less energy than their non-energy-efficient counterparts.

Buy in Bulk

When you go to the supermarket next time, you could consider buying more items in bulk. The price tag may be a little higher, but it will work out cheaper than buying the same item more frequently.

You will firstly save money on transport costs (which, by the way, is also better for the environment), and secondly, bulk items usually come with less packaging, which is also better for the environment. Be sure to know which items are best when purchasing in bulk, as you should not be buying everything in bulk; for example, you would never buy perishable food in bulk unless you own a restaurant.

Install Solar Panels

Alternative energy is a great way to power your home if you are looking to live more sustainably. Solar Panels are perhaps the most approachable alternative energy source for residential homes, and yes, they have an expensive upfront cost but trust us when we say that they will pay themselves off in the long run.

Reuse, Reduce and Recycle

This is one of the easiest and most efficient ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle. It may take a while to get started before you’re clued up about the topic, but once you get the ball rolling, it should become second nature in no time. Be sure to look into all how you can reuse or switch to reusables, reduce waste, and recycle waste and other items.

Stop Wasting Food

Whether we like it or not, it takes a massive amount of energy to produce any kind of food. For example, it takes around 32.5 gallons (125 liters) to produce one average-sized apple or, on average, 4004 gallons (15,400 liters) of water to make 2.2 pounds (1 kg) of beef. These figures are pretty scary, and we hope they will convince you to waste less food!

Grandkids sometimes think that they know everything and that their grandparents are out of touch with today’s world and reality. And while there might be a kernel of truth to that, grandparents still have a wealth of knowledge that can really help. They may need to be tweaked to fit the current world but they are still valuable.
