Using 34 different indicators of local job markets and economic environment, WalletHub conducted an in-depth comparison of current employment conditions in each state. Based on their findings, these are the 5 states with the most challenging markets to find stable employment opportunities.
1. West Virginia
According to many recent studies, West Virginia claims the top spot on this list. Although its unemployment rate is nearly at the national average, other issues make it difficult to earn a sustainable income. There are many contributing factors such as low levels of educational achievement, recent job losses in the mining industry, a large rural population, a long history of labor disputes, and the second-lowest median household income in the country. Unfortunately, its economic development has struggled for decades. Based on the analysis, the Mountain State currently has the worst job market and ranked second for the overall worst economic environment in the country.
2. Kentucky
Although employment rates are returning to pre-pandemic levels, Kentucky is another state that isn’t very promising for those looking for high-paying positions. Not only does it have the worst economic environment overall, but it also ranked #9 for the worst job market. Residents and the state’s economy have had a tough time recovering from the decline within the coal industry. However, low income and level of education continue to exacerbate the problem.
3. Mississippi
Unfortunately, Mississippi often finds itself at the bottom of these lists. It ranked 47th when it came to job opportunities and 48th for its overall economic environment. Although the Magnolia State may offer the lowest cost of living in the country, it also has reported negative job growth, the lowest median household income, the lowest ranking for education, and a court system that is hostile to business. Many analysts believe the restrictive legislation may be a further cause for its difficulty in attracting and retaining skilled workers.
4. Louisiana
Louisiana is another state that didn’t fare well in this study. It ranked 49th for its overall job market. Like its neighbor, Louisiana has consistently experienced tough economic times over the last 50 years. Although it falls in the middle of the pack for unemployment rates and average monthly starting salaries, it remains near the bottom when it comes to median annual income. These findings reflect many challenges jobseekers in Louisiana continue to face in the overall economic landscape.
5. Pennsylvania
Many people will be surprised to see Pennsylvania on this list. However, the Keystone State rounds out the top 5 as one of the worst states to find a job right now. While most indicators put it above national averages, it ranked particularly low for its overall economic environment. The fact that Pennsylvania has remained at the bottom of this list for the last several years also suggests there are deeper issues that need to be addressed to create better paying opportunities and greater economic stability for workers.
