12 So-Called “Frugal” Habits That Are Actually a Waste of Time and Money

Published:

Being frugal is an excellent way to live within your means to achieve your financial goals. However, in some instances, some frugal habits can lead you to poor choices that could be costly and affect your quality of life.

Let’s talk about some so-called frugal habits that waste time and money.

Extreme Couponing for Products You Won’t Use or Need

Looking for coupons and deals to try and save money takes a lot of time and effort.  You need to sit for hours clipping coupons and hunting down product deals. Unfortunately, most of these coupons can only be redeemed for specific items you may not use. That results in wasted time and clutter as you get to keep products you don’t need.

Hoarding Free Samples or Promotional Items

Some frugal people hoard free samples or promotional items as they believe they will be valuable or useful. Unfortunately, you end up stacking so many samples that you’re unlikely to use, leading to clutter and limited storage space.

Skipping on your home, car, or health insurance can help you save money. Unfortunately, it could also put you at considerable risk in the event of a medical emergency or house accident. Consider shopping around for insurance covers to find one that provides enough coverage and is affordable.

Opting for the Cheapest Option Without  Considering Value for Money

Buying the cheapest products may seem like a great idea as you spend as little as possible on items, but you could be sacrificing quality over quantity. Some cheaply acquired items end up breaking or not functioning at all.

Spend a few more dollars on quality products that will last for years. Alternatively, you can still be frugal and shop for quality items at thrift stores to save money.

Buying Items Because They’re on Sale

Buying items because they are on sale won’t save you money. You could spend a lot more than what’s on your budget due to promotional tactics. Avoid spending just because something is on sale if you weren’t planning to buy it in the first place. Being mindful about your spending will help you save money.

Getting Into Loyalty Programs That Require Excessive Spending to Earn Rewards

Signing up for a loyalty program seems prudent as you get discounts, rewards, and other incentives. Sadly, some loyalty programs require you to spend more for rewards. You may use a lot more money to earn minimal discounts, which is not worth your time or money.

Buying Perishables in Bulk Without Considering Expiration Dates or Storage Limitations

Buying items from Costco or Sam’s Club may seem like a good idea for getting a lot of things at a cheaper price, but it could be a costly mistake if you don’t have enough storage. Additionally, buying perishable items in bulk without checking their expiration date could leave you with a lot of waste if you don’t use them before expiration.

Consider buying non-perishable products like dry foods, toilet paper, and paper towels. However, ensure you have enough storage for the products you intend to buy.

Spending a Lot of Time Looking for the Lowest Price

Spending hours moving from one shop to the next to save a few dollars seems wise. However, considering the time and money you’ll spend driving around, you soon realize it’s not worth it.  That also applies to purchases made online. Although they may be cheaper, you’ll likely drive to the pick-up station and spend more on the items.

Life is short to not treat yourself once in a while. Going out for lunch occasionally or stopping by for a latte won’t make you poor. Don’t feel guilty when you reward yourself for all your hard work. Remember that life is all balance.

While going the DIY route might seem like a tremendous frugal idea, sometimes it can be costly, especially if you don’t have the knowledge or tools to complete the work. A tiny mistake can lead to further repairs and damage to others, requiring a professional to come in.

Avoid doing home repairs and instead hire a professional. Although you’ll likely pay more upfront, you could save more in future repairs.

Reusing Disposable Items

Some items like plastic bags,  paper straws, disposable plastic bottles, and specific food containers are non-recyclable items that shouldn’t be reused. However, things like refillable water bottles can be reused to save money.

Continuous use of disposable items could expose you to health hazards. You may spend a lot more money getting better, quality products in the long run. Knowing which items to reuse and those you shouldn’t will help you save money and your health.

Research shows that at least 78% of homeowners are delaying home maintenance and repair projects because of rising costs.  While this frugal move may seem like a money-saving tip, it could be costly as the undone repairs could lead to more damage and expensive repairs.

Eventually, delaying these repairs could affect your home insurance coverage. Avoid delaying necessary repairs like structural issues, roof leaks, mold formation, exposed wiring, or damaged walkways.
