7 Foods Frugal People Never Buy On Sale

Published:

If you like to be frugal, then you probably love a good sale! However, just because there’s a good deal does not always mean that you should vouch for it. There are some foods that you should never buy on sale. Read on to learn more about these foods to avoid on sale if you’d like to avoid disappointment.

Luckily, canned food is already affordable, so there’s no reason to purchase damaged canned food, even when it is discounted. The reason that you should always avoid dented canned goods is that the damaged areas can permit bacteria to seep into the can and spoil the food inside.

Pre-cut Produce

Pre-chopped or cut produce can be a convenient way to ensure you eat some healthy food. However, it’s not a good idea to buy these foods on sale. The quality of the fruit or veggies might be questionable when the pre-cut versions of these foods are on sale.

Furthermore, different foods cut and placed into one container may incur cross-contamination when the food has been sitting unconsumed for too long.

Bruised Produce

It’s always great to get whole fruit and vegetables on sale, but you should be wary of these items if they have any deep indents or strange coloration. These observations may be a sign that the food has passed its peak freshness. It would be safer to skip these items and go for ones that appear to be fresher, even if you have to pay a little more money.

Items That Are Almost Expired

For various food items, expiry dates may just act as a sort of suggestion, although some foods are highly perishable, and for them, the expiry date should always be taken seriously.

Take care when buying perishable food that is on sale, and only do so if you know that you will be consuming the food on the same or next day.

Bulk Spices

It’s not very well known, but spices and herbs don’t last very long. They may be dried, but these goods lose their potency after six months of being opened. Buying herbs and spices in bulk may seem like a good idea, although unless you use them all within a short time frame, you’re going to be left with herbs and spices that are not adding much flavor to your food.

Bulk Dairy

Unless you are certain you are going to be consuming dairy items before they expire, you’d be better off avoiding bulk dairy items that are on sale. The last thing you want is to buy a whole lot of dairy items only to have them spoil because you didn’t use them all in time.

Pre-made Meals

Pre-made meals are a go-to for many folks who want to grab something last minute, although it may be best to skip these items when they are on sale. Discounted pre-made meals are usually not from the same day, so there is a high likelihood that they’ve gone past peak freshness.
