Crime is alive and well (or dead) in the United States and some states are more dangerous than others. The World Population Review calculates crime rates by state when the information is available.
Whenever we look at crime rates, it can be difficult to calculate exactly what constitutes a crime (crimes against people versus crimes against property) and many things go underreported.
According to the World Population Review, crime rates vary significantly between states based on several factors, including population density and economic factors.
However, with the available information, here are the most dangerous states in the United States in 2024 with the highest violent crime rates.
District of Columbia

While not technically a state, DC holds the distinction of being the most dangerous “state” in the United States. It has a 999.8 crime rate per 100,000 people. According to me Metropolitan Police Department, homicides increased by 14% compared to 2021, robbery by 24%, burglary by 8%, and 4% in motor vehicle theft.
Alaska

Alaska has the second-highest crime rate of 837.85 per 100,000 residents and since DC is not a state, has the special distinction of being the most dangerous state in the USA. While it may have gorgeous scenery, it has such a high violent crime rate compared to other states and other countries in the region.
New Mexico

New Mexico has the third-highest crime rate in the United States. While its crime continues to be higher than average, New Mexico is experiencing a downward trend in violent crime which is very good news.
Tennessee

Tennessee’s crime rate of 672.70 per 100,000 is the fourth-highest in the country. However, it seems like according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) most crime was centered in Memphis and Shelby County. Outside those areas, the crime might not be as high.
Arkansas

Arkansas’s crime rate of 671.93 per 100,000 is the fifth-highest in the country. According to the CDC at the National Center for Health Statistics, Arkansas has one of the highest death rates from firearms- perhaps due to low gun laws.
