The 4 Most Dangerous States (And the 5 Safest)

Everyone wants to be safe. No one wants to live in a dangerous place.

Measuring crime is a complicated matter since crime rates vary greatly depending on how you define crime or whether you account for specific cities or locations within a state accounting for a higher spike in rates.

The World Population Review compiles lists of crime rates in many different states but there are large discrepancies between different cities and parts of each state.

However, these are the rankings as they stand. These are the states with the lowest violent crime rates and then the 5 states with the highest violent crime rates.

Maine

Main is gorgeous and very cold in the winter but it also has the distinction of being the safest state in the Union. Maine has the lowest crime rate 108.58, and the incidence Count was 1466. Maine residents aren’t as concerned about their overall safety compared to the rest of the nation.

New Hampshire

Following the trend of beautiful and northern states, New Hampshire comes in second with a crime rate of 146.38 and just 2000 violent incidents. It also comes in well below the average rate for property crimes.

Vermont

Vermont, known as the Green Mountain State, shares a border with Canada and is esteemed as one of the safest places to visit in the United States. With a crime rate of 173.4 per 100,000 people, Vermont holds the rank of the third-lowest crime rate among the states.

Connecticut

The fourth lowest crime rate is in Connecticut. Connecticut has a crime rate of 181.59 per 100,000 people.  Like the states above, this small state is up north and is known for its beauty and cold winters.

New Jersey

Surprisingly, New Jersey comes in fifth as one of the safest states in America. New Jersey’s crime rate of 195.36 is the fifth-lowest nationwide. This is the second consecutive year that New Jersey was among the states with the lowest violent crime rates in the nation.

The Most Dangerous Spot in America

Let’s talk crime. The most dangerous state in the USA is not a state at all, but a district. While not technically a state, DC holds the distinction of being the most dangerous “state” in the United States. It has a  999.8 crime rate per 100,000 people. According to me Metropolitan Police Department, homicides increased by 14% compared to 2021, robbery by 24%, burglary by 8%, and 4% in motor vehicle theft.

Alaska

Alaska has the second-highest crime rate of 837.85 per 100,000 residents and since DC is not a state, has the special distinction of being the most dangerous state in the USA. While it may have gorgeous scenery, it has such a high violent crime rate compared to other states and other countries in the region.

New Mexico

New Mexico has the third-highest crime rate in the United States. While its crime continues to be higher than average, New Mexico is experiencing a downward trend in violent crime which is very good news.

Tennessee

Tennessee’s crime rate of 672.70 per 100,000 is the fourth-highest in the country. However, it seems like according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) most crime was centered in Memphis and Shelby County. Outside those areas, the crime might not be as high.

Arkansas

Arkansas’s crime rate of 671.93 per 100,000 is the fifth-highest in the country. According to the CDC at the National Center for Health Statistics, Arkansas has one of the highest death rates from firearms- perhaps due to low gun laws.

Some states have a high population density and many population centers. Others are mostly rural and may have little population. The difference between the top and bottom states in terms of population is enormous.
