Should You Buy an Electric Car? The 15 States Where You Can Actually Charge One

Published:

When you look at the slow-down in EV sales, many people report that the lack of charging stations, especially fast chargers, is affecting whether they want these vehicles. In many states, there are few of these per capita. In others, their numbers are rapidly growing.

The number of EV fast chargers per capita is increasing in virtually every state. Here’s where the highest numbers are per capita.

SmartAsset ranked states by the amount of DC fast chargers – which provide the closest equivalent to a trip to the gas station, in terms of “refueling” – per capita.

With 8464 EV fast chargers across the state, California is doing a good job of adding these chargers. Despite its enormous population, it has the best per-capita number of these chargers of all the states.

Wyoming has the smallest population of any state but is in second place for fast chargers per capita. At just 94 chargers, it has enough for the major population centers.

This state is one of the fastest growing for EV chargers. Its number of fast chargers has grown by about 37%. With its 103 fast chargers, it’s quickly becoming more convenient for EV drivers.

As a major U.S. market for EVs, Colorado is working to get more fast chargers in place. With 733 fast chargers, it has one of the highest numbers of any state and one of the highest per-capita rates.
