15 States Where Gas Has Recently Become A Lot More Affordable

Gas prices have been lowering since the high peaks of the summer of 2022, but those reductions are helping some states more than others. While one state has prices almost 20% lower, most states are less than 10% lower.

Where you live can impact your bills a lot, and according to this study, how much you pay for gas really depends on the state you live in.

To find out this information, Smart Asset took data from AAA. The prices reflect the average across each state for regular gasoline per gallon. States were ranked by the percent decline in price between November 28, 2023, and November 28, 2022.

SmartAsset ranked the states by the biggest average gas price decline over the last year. Here are the 15 states with the biggest reductions in gas prices.

Utah

In the land of arches, gas prices have fallen more than in any other state. There’s been an 18.6% reduction in gas prices, taking the price from $3.91 to $3.19 across the state.

 

Indiana

After Utah, there’s a jump down to the second-highest reduction in gas prices. With a lowering of gas prices by 15.4%, this state is seeing the benefits of the overall reduction that’s going on across the country.

 

Arizona

With a 14.1% lowering of gas prices, things in Arizona are looking up. The price a year before had been exceptionally high at $4.08 and has since come back down to $3.51.

 

Michigan

With a reduction in gas prices of 13.3%, the state with an extra peninsula is seeing much lower gas prices than before. Prices are an average of about $3.14, down from $3.63 the year earlier.

 

Ohio

Following close behind Michigan, Ohio saw its gas prices get 13.1% lower over the last year. While prices averaged at $3.43 a year ago, today, they pass the magic threshold and are now at $2.98.

 

New Jersey

With a dip of almost 12%, this state is seeing better days when it comes to gas prices. The price was $3.73 a year ago, while the current average is $3.28. It’s looking up in the Garden State!

 

Idaho

With its gas price fall of 11.7%, gas prices in the land of potatoes have seen a lot of reduction over the past year and a half, helping everyone in the state. The price at one time reached as high as $5.25.

 

Maine

In mid-2022, gas prices got up to $5.09, and they’ve gotten steadily lower since then. Over the past year, the price went from $3.82 down to $3.38. This is a reduction of 11.6%.

 

Delaware

The gas price reduction of 11.5% in Delaware has made this tiny state easier to travel in. In mid-2022, the price reached $4.99 and has been going down ever since.

 

Montana

Montana is close behind Delaware, with a price reduction of 11.48%. The state has seen its average gas prices go from $3.63 to $3.21 in one year, easing the burden of general inflation that every state is seeing.

Seeing an 11.4% decrease in gas prices has been helpful to everyone in the high-population state of Illinois. The price was $3.83 a year ago. Currently, the average price is just $3.40.

 

Iowa

With its gas price average going down 11.1%, Iowa is now seeing one of the better prices in the country. While a year ago it was at $3.26, today it’s at an average of just $2.89.

 

New Hampshire

New Hampshire has seen its gas prices go from an average of $3.66 to $3.36. This represents a price reduction of 10.9% for the Granite State.

 

Nevada

A reduction of gas prices by 10.8% should make it easier to travel the state’s long distances. While it had a price of $4.69 a year ago, today, its average is still a little high at $4.19.

 

Vermont

With its 10.5% lowering of gas prices, Vermont is doing well at keeping the prices lower. It’s gone from having an average price of $3.87 to today having an average of $3.46.
