15 Things Rural Voters Think About the 2024 Election

When it comes to the national elections, there have been clearer and clearer lines between the voting habits of those in cities and those of people in rural areas. Many people aren’t sure what rural voters believe or why they vote the way they do. Here are 15 things that rural voters are thinking as the election ramps up.

Many Vote Against Biden

Almost one-third of voters in rural areas will be voting for Donald Trump as a way to vote against Joe Biden. They aren’t necessarily voting for who they want, but against who they don’t want.

Most Rural Republicans Back Trump

Among all of the rural, Republican voters, about two-thirds support Trump in the election. Only a little over half of rural Trump supporters, 55%, say they’re very happy with him being on the ticket.

Court Cases Don’t Matter

Rural voters don’t care much about the court cases brought against Trump. It isn’t turning voters away from the former president, and it isn’t stopping them from donating money to his campaign.

They Don’t See Contributions From Biden

By a large majority, voters in rural areas haven’t seen the massive investments that Biden had promised to put into these communities. This has made them happy to vote against him.

The Economy Is Terrible

Americans in rural areas are more likely to believe that the economy is in terrible condition than those who live in urban areas. They also believe that their areas are worse off than the rest of the country.

Democracy Isn’t at Risk

Biden has put out a message that this election is putting democracy itself at risk. For those in rural areas, this isn’t the case. Rural voters aren’t worried about the state of democracy, nor do they believe that any of the candidates is threatening it.

More Rural Republicans Support Trump Than Urban Ones

There are Republicans in every area of the country, and the rural ones often think differently from the urban ones. Among rural Republicans. 63% support Trump. This is almost 15 points more than with urban Republicans.

January 6th Doesn’t Matter

Most rural voters who support Trump say that Democrats made up the January 6th charges to keep Trump from becoming president. About 61% of them feel this way. This is 13 points higher than with urban Trump voters.

A Trump Conviction Doesn’t Matter

Trump has a lot of charges against him, but even if he were to be convicted of them, this wouldn’t change the rural vote for Trump. About 92% of rural Trump voters say their support for Trump wouldn’t change.

Low Enthusiasm for Biden

Among rural Americans, only about 35% are likely to cast their votes for Biden. There isn’t much enthusiasm, for him as a candidate in small towns while enthusiasm for Trump looms large.

Biden Isn’t Favored to Win

Among rural Biden voters, only 29% of them are very happy that he’s on the ballot. About 38% of these voters think that Biden beating Trump is very likely.

Voting Against Trump

Just as with rural Trump voters who are voting against Biden, many rural Biden voters are voting against Trump rather than for Biden. The majority of them, 53%, report that they’re voting this way.

They Aren’t Aware of Infrastructure Plans

When asked whether rural voters were aware of any of Biden’s plans for infrastructure rebuilding, only 23% had. About 33% of urban voters were aware of it. When asked whether they’d heard about plans for better broadband internet, only 41% of them had.

Communities Are Doing Worse

People in rural companies felt the financial pinch of the pandemic, and they don’t feel that their communities are bouncing back. Fully half of them say they haven’t financially recovered from it yet.

Biden Could Hurt Their Communities

Almost half of rural Trump voters, about 45%, report that they believe Biden could hurt their communities if he were to win the election. Among urban Trump voters, only 33% feel this way.
