15 of America’s Biggest “Rip-Offs”, Ranked by Actual People

Published:

In such a huge country, there are millions of things to do, see, and experience. However, some of these are rip-offs.

Casino.org used Google Trends and Tripadvisor to determine the top “rip-offs” people talked about at national, state, and local levels. Then, they used the top lists to survey 5,000 participants. From the findings, they separated the downright deceptions from the attractions worth the money.

These things aren’t worth the money, the time, or both.

Disney World

No matter what you want to do at Disney World, it costs a lot. With the lines so long and the attractions so spread out, it can be tough to see even a third of what one of the parks has to offer.

College Textbooks

When it’s time to buy textbooks for the semester, sticker shock is common. The cost of textbooks has skyrocketed in recent years, and the prices can be $150 and up for a simple book.

Credit Scores

If you’ve ever seen your credit score dip for seemingly no reason, you know what a rip-off these scores can be. They don’t reveal exactly what goes into your number, and mistakes are common. All of this can cost you big in higher interest rates.

Movie Theater Snacks

If you haven’t been to the movies in a while, you might not have seen the latest prices on snacks. A little bit of popcorn generally isn’t worth $8, but somehow, this is what they charge.

State Fairs

When the tickets cost so much that you’re only able to ride a couple of rides, that’s a rip-off. The area tends to be very overcrowded, making it hard to see a lot of displays and hard to get where you want to go. Then, the food is overpriced.

Ski Resorts

No matter what you want to do at a ski report, there’s a hefty fee associated with it. Even taking the ski lifts to get to the hill is extremely expensive. It all feels like one big money grab after a while.

Theme Parks

It doesn’t have to be Disney to be a rip-off. There are countless theme parks across the U.S., and each is there to rack up as much from visitors as it can. From tickets to food to games, you can expect to pay way too much for all of it.

Hotel Mini-Bars

Wow, isn’t that nice of them to stock your fridge with food and drinks? Not so fast. Everything in there is priced at about 300% of what you would pay for the items anywhere else.

Airport Food and Drinks

Why are airport food and drinks priced so high? Because you’re trapped. You can’t go somewhere else to buy reasonably priced meals during your layover, so you have to pay whatever they want to charge.

Cable Television

There are still many people who use cable TV, and it’s always been a rip-off. It’s extremely overpriced, and you can’t choose the channels you get. They have packages you have to pay for that include many channels that you don’t want and will never watch.

Specialty Coffee

The cost of a cup of black coffee may be what you’d expect, but specialty coffees have very inflated prices for no apparent reason. They’re popular, so people keep paying to get them despite the ridiculous prices.

Alcohol in Restaurants

Why is alcohol so expensive in restaurants? You pay a price in restaurants that’s many times over what you could get it for elsewhere. And, the restaurants probably get volume discounts that they aren’t passing along to the customers.

Desserts in Restaurants

Like alcohol, there is a huge markup on desserts when you eat out. Sure, they look pretty, but there’s no good reason for their exorbitant prices- even when chocolate is involved.

Travel Deals

There are now countless companies that claim they’re getting you a rare deal on your travel. However, that’s often not the case. These sites are more for booking now than to get money off the price.

For those who are low-income, these loans may seem like a necessity when there’s no money left until payday. However, these loans come with predatory fees that make you pay many times more than the actual value of the loan in the first place.

We all want to be safe, and living in a city that is high with crime is not usually what people look for when they look for a place to live. Tracking crime statistics and safety is a complicated measure, but the FBI does its best to track different crime rates in most cities and states in the U.S.

You may be surprised to learn which cities made the list of the most dangerous cities. We often associate crime with large cities, such as New York, Chicago, and L.A., but those cities did not make it to the top five.
