In our current political landscape, a lot of people strongly identify as Republicans or Democrats, conservatives or liberals. When you get to know people, though, you’ll find that very few check all the boxes for one side or the other.
Many conservatives hold some liberal views, and vice versa. Knowing this isn’t just interesting; it can help remind us that we’re all more alike than different.
Here are some issues that bring out the inner conservative among many left-leaning people:
Guns

The stereotype is that everyone who owns guns is a right-wing “gun nut.” That’s so wrong. Many left-leaning people own guns; they just support more regulations and don’t feel the need to use them as statements.
Foreign Entities Owning U.S. Land

Few object to a non-citizen owning a home in America and living there. It’s very different when foreign governments and corporations buy up lands and businesses here, and it’s not just the right that objects to it.
Capital Punishment

Support for execution is much higher on the right than on the left. However, many on the left support it for the most horrific crimes. They’re likely to want ironclad proof first, though.
Crime and Punishment

Republicans like to hit Democrats as being soft on crime. In reality, many left-leaning people support policing, prosecution, and meaningful sentencing. However, they also want reforms to increase fairness and reduce abuse and corruption.
Foreign Aid

Why do we give so much money to other nations when we have so many problems here at home? Sometimes there are good reasons that involve global stability and national security, but in general, the idea is a tough sell.
Having Children

People on the left agree that people who can’t afford children shouldn’t have them. However, they’ll point out the tendency of the right to ignore the problem on their side, and they’re more supportive of efforts to help single mothers living in poverty.
PC/Woke Culture

The right may get vocally riled about this to the point of incoherence, but they sometimes have a point. Many left-leaning people want to be open-minded and inclusive but get tired of being told they’re thinking and speaking wrong.
Gender Language

People on the right aren’t the only ones who find keeping up with the ever-changing pronouns and other terms confusing and exhausting. With people on the left, the difference is that slights are usually unintended, not from malice.
Cultural Appropriation

Profiting off another culture or its people without giving credit is unethical. Wearing a sombrero on Cinco de Mayo if you’re not Mexican is not a racist act.
Shutting Down GT Programs and Magnet Schools

This has occurred in multiple places across America, ostensibly because certain racial and ethnic groups are underrepresented. It’s caused outrage among parents across the political spectrum, who see their children being short-changed due to racial politics.
Regulating Social Media

You hear a lot of conservatives complaining that social media is biased against their views. (Usually, it’s their behavior, not their views.) But a lot of liberals, especially parents, find social media toxic for both society and their children.
Transgender Athletes

It’s become one of the major hot-button issues of our time, and we won’t say too much about it. What we will say is that not all opposition comes from religious zealots who seem more motivated by hate than anything else. Much of the concern comes from feminist women who have teenage daughters in sports and fear injuries and unfair advantages.
Learning the Language

The U.S. does not have an official national language, but it’s English. Liberals are more patient about it, but they, too, get frustrated by interacting with employees and customers who can’t speak it.
Affirmative Action

Few people like to admit it, but there are good arguments for and against it, and not all arguments against it are rooted in racism. Many on the left are fine with efforts to increase opportunities for disadvantaged groups; they’re not okay with it when those opportunities come at their expense.
Cancel Culture

Like cultural appropriation and gender language, this falls under PC/woke culture but has become such a big issue that it deserves its mention. Conservatives complain the loudest about it, but many on the left have had careers and lives ruined due to merely being on the wrong side of an aggressive, activist group’s point of view and expectations.
