Every generation likes to blame preceding generations for all kinds of things, fair or unfair.
There has been a lot of criticism leveraged at boomers recently, but millennials have their own fair share of failings.
People blame boomers for things they thought were fine yesterday, and Millennials will be no different, though many argue they’re already being blamed for many things.
Still, what are some things that Gen Z and whoever follows them will likely blame Millennials for in the coming years?
Device Addiction in Children

Millennials get a lot of blame for letting devices raise their kids. There’s some truth to this, but wouldn’t this have been true had that tech been available earlier? After all, Gen X kids were already spending too much time watching TV.
Vanished Digital Privacy

Erosions in digital privacy began well before most Millennials were adults, and they took off after 9-11. Where blame may accurately fall is for too willingly going along with those erosions.
Terrible Names for Kids

At some point, a lot of people, in the pursuit of being “special” and unique, started giving their kids some odd names. If this is still a trend in 50 years, Millennials will deserve a hefty share of the blame.
Not Stopping AI

No one knows if the most dire predictions about AI will come true, but if they do, Millennials will be blamed for not getting it under control. Fair or unfair, people will say Millennials failed to do this after Boomers and Gen Xers stepped aside or died off.
Painting Over Hardwood Trim and Cabinets
Hardwood is one of the most desirable and valuable materials in a home. It’s hard to say that Millennials started the trend of painting over it, but it’s fair to say that it expanded when they became adults and homeowners.
Painting Over Brick

We can say the same about bricks. Once you paint over them, that’s it; you’ve lost all the rustic and aesthetic qualities brick conveys. Leave those beautiful brick walls and fireplaces the way they are!
Not Having Solved Every Problem Facing Humanity

Every generation likes to blame previous generations for all the ills of the world. It won’t be any different with Millennials.
Population Decline

Millennials do have fewer children per capita than Boomers and Gen Xers did. That’s often depicted as selfishness, but there’s more to it than that. Because of high housing prices and economic stability, many Millennials have waited longer to have children.
Killing off Cemeteries

This is somewhat of a joke since cemeteries aren’t going to go away. However, people are increasingly turning to “green” burials rather than being interred in a coffin. If this growth continues, Millennials will lead earlier generations in the practice.
Letting the Boomers Stay in Power for So Long

If Millennials take a lot of heat from other generations, Boomers take even more. Boomers have clung to power, influence, and wealth longer than seems fair, and many in Gen X would agree. The problem is that it isn’t so easy to dislodge entrenched power and influence even when you try your best.
Political Polarization

History will probably also point the finger at Boomers for this one since much of the deep political polarization today is an extension of the Boomers still fighting the same fights they did when they were young. Still, Millennials may come under fire for not toning it down, and that brings us to…
Toxic Effects of Social Media

Few question that social media can be toxic and that it drives polarization, animosity, and misinformation. Millennials were the first generation to grow up with widespread access to social media, so they may end up being blamed for feeding its pernicious effects rather than reining them in.
Not Reversing Climate Change

Climate change did not start with Millennials, and Millennials, by and large, do share great concern about it. The problem, again, is that Millennials do not control the levers of power right now. By the time they do, it might be too late, but they’ll still likely be blamed for it by their grandchildren.
The Loss of Rights

As with the erosion of digital privacy, Millennials grew up during a time of clawback of individual rights. They’re not the ones who limited them or took them away, but they’ll again get blamed for not fighting back enough. We’ll see what they do once the Boomers and most Gen Xers are out of the picture.
All the Same Things They’re Already Blamed For

Millennials already get blamed for all kinds of things by older and younger generations alike, some seriously and some ridiculously. There’s no reason to think this is ever going to change!
