The 10 Most Sober States in the United States

According to the data, more people drink in excess in some areas than others. There are states that have hard-drinking residents who regularly drink a lot. Other states have much fewer binge drinkers.

Often, the major religion of the area dictates how much the average person there drinks. According to Intoxistates, these are the states with the lowest amount of excessive drinkers.

 

1. Utah

Utah is the least drunk state in the U.S., and there’s an obvious reason behind it. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is most active in Utah, and a key part of this sect is that members refrain from drinking. Only about 12.41% of this state’s residents engage in excessive drinking.

 

2. Oklahoma

In Oklahoma, only about 12.82% of the population drinks to excess. There are a lot of people who identify as Protestant Christians here, and many denominations ask that their members not drink.

 

3. West Virginia

West Virginia and many other Southern states are often referred to as the Bible Belt. Many Protestants reject alcohol completely or drink only on special occasions. About 14.34% of the population drinks a lot.

 

4. Alabama

Another notch in the Bible Belt, the drinking here isn’t far removed from that of West Virginia. The binge drinkers in the Heart of Dixie make up just 14.38% of the state’s population.

 

5. Nevada

Nevada, like Utah, has a large population of Mormons. They don’t believe in ever drinking alcohol. This has contributed to the state’s 14.89% rate of excessive drinkers.

 

6. Kentucky

Back in the Bible Belt, this state doesn’t have a lot of binge drinkers. Only about 15.03% of the population excessively drink, and it may be due to the main religion practiced there- Protestant Christianity.

 

7. Maryland

Is Maryland in the South? Is it a part of the Bible Belt? There’s a lot of debate on this subject. What we don’t have to debate is that 15.16% of this state’s population are binge drinkers.

 

8. Arkansas

People in Arkansas largely live in rural areas and small cities, but they don’t tend to drink excessively. Only about 15.42% of people in the Natural State drink to excess regularly.

 

9. Delaware

Delaware may not be in the Bible Belt, but it somehow has a low number of people who drink to excess. Just 15.58% of its population binge drink on a regular basis. The karaoke bars must be empty there.

 

10. Mississippi

Mississippi is in the heart of the Bible Belt, and many of its people abstain from drinking or drink pretty rarely. In the Magnolia State, about 15.67% of the population tends to drink too much.

Some states have a high population density and many population centers. Others are mostly rural and may have little population. The difference between the top and bottom states in terms of population is enormous.
