15 Most Overrated Cities in the World That Don’t Live Up To The Hype

Published:

The world is filled with exciting, spectacular cities, and many of them are top tourist destinations. Inevitably, though, people find that some cities just don’t live up to the hype.

Following are 15 that frequently come up when you ask people about this.

Las Vegas

Unless you’re really into casinos, the gambling scene in Las Vegas gets old pretty quickly. Once that happens, you’ll find that there’s not much else special about the city.

Dubai

This is the only one that seems to come up more frequently than Vegas. People describe it as overpriced, a “fake city,” and a center for human trafficking.

Paris

Don’t get us wrong– Paris is a beautiful city rich in history. You just have to do it right. If you go to see all the big-name attractions, you’ll probably find it overrated due to the crowds and the costs. Doing some research into how to enjoy the real Paris is the way to go.

Rome

We could probably write the same thing we did for Paris about Rome. After you go to all the “must-see” places, take some time to discover the real Rome. You won’t find it overrated.

Los Angeles

Beaches, lots of sun, warm weather, Hollywood…what’s not to like about the City of Angels? Well, how about smog, mind-numbing traffic, and crime?

Miami

Sure, it has access to great beaches, but Miami lost whatever authenticity it had long ago. Now it’s just a sunny, expensive tourist trap.

Nashville

Nashville is the Capital of Country Music and undeniably has a huge presence in the genre. But beyond that, there’s really not that much to it unless drunken tourists in cowboy boots and hats are your thing.

Austin

The other hub of country music also has the slogan “Keep Austin Weird.” Austin still has great food and lives up to its reputation as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” but crime, homelessness, and out-of-state influxes have diluted much of what made Austin great.

Cancun

Cancun has a reputation as a safe, affordable vacation getaway in Mexico, and that’s largely true. The downside is realizing that it’s mostly a party town that you have to share with hordes of inebriated tourists.

New York

Like Paris and Rome, New York really is a fantastic city. Its problem is that since, like those others, it’s often called the greatest city in the world, it can never live up to that, at least not consistently. If you lower your expectations, you’ll be less likely to be disappointed.

Moscow

Beautiful architecture and rich history are here for sure but consider the downsides. It’s in an authoritarian country where most of the people are oppressed, and it’s not uncommon for Americans to be jailed on phony, politicized charges.

Portland

This Pacific Northwest city is known for its vibrant culture, including a good music scene and lots of brewpubs. On the other hand, it rains for about half the year, and crime, while exaggerated, has nonetheless been on the rise.

Philadelphia

The history on display in Philly is worth seeing, and you shouldn’t miss a chance to enjoy an authentic Philly cheesesteak. Like other big cities in the region, though, it’s a tough town, and it doesn’t always live up to its nickname: the City of Brotherly Love.

Orlando

It’s the mother of all tourist traps. If you go for a family vacation, you’ll probably have fun, but just be ready to shell out way more money than you should for everything.

Phoenix

One of the biggest cities in the Sun Belt, Phoenix attracts droves of retirees and families looking for a hot job market and affordable homes. That’s resulted in endless sprawl, smog, and the loss of anything that once made it unique culturally.

Picture this: you find a stack of cash. Do you pocket the unexpected windfall, or do you take the noble route and hand it in to the police?

In this scenario, a significant 47% of Americans admit they would keep the found money, assuming no one saw their stroke of luck. Interestingly, gender doesn’t play a big role, with both women (47.4%) and men (46.6%) expressing similar inclinations to be tempted by the cash.
