Has there ever been something you wanted so badly, and then, when you got it, you weren’t quite as thrilled as you thought you’d be? You’re not alone! Following are some things that a lot of people think aren’t worth the hype.
Being Older

When you’re a kid, you can’t wait until you’re old enough to drive, vote, buy alcohol, etc. Then one day you’re looking in the mirror and wondering where your youth went.
Casts and Crutches

In those younger days, you might have been a little envious of a classmate who “got to use” crutches or have a cast. When you suffered an injury that got you your little prize, though, it wasn’t so much fun after all.
Eye Patches

Pirate movies and some action movies (we’re looking at you, Escape from New York) made eye patches cool. In reality, though, losing an eye doesn’t sound like such a great thing.
Living off the Grid

Living off the grid means depriving yourself of a lot of things you take for granted. Moving to a small rural town doesn’t count, by the way.
Boats

There’s a saying that the best two days when you own a boat are the day you buy it and the day you sell it. Another saying goes that the only thing better than a boat is a friend with a boat. Those two sayings tell you plenty.
RVs

If you own an RV, you’ll probably use it more than you would a boat, so that’s good. On the other hand, you probably won’t use it enough to justify buying it instead of renting one. Plus, if you have an HOA, you likely will have to pay to store it somewhere, and that isn’t cheap.
Airplanes

Having your plane would be great, right? When you use it, it will be, but how often will you use it? Is it worth the maintenance and hangar costs?
Large Livestock

Sometimes people get the notion that it would be nice to have something like a cow or an alpaca. Then they run into the reality of feeding it and providing a living space. Horses can be an exception to this, but they aren’t always.
Large Houses

A big house is a status symbol. It tells others that you’ve made it (or that you’ve borrowed a lot). Congratulations! Have fun furnishing and cleaning it, plus paying the taxes!
Getting Back Together with an Ex

People sometimes find themselves missing the good things about an ex and thinking it might be worth another try. A lot of them end up rediscovering what made their exes in the first place.
Leaving the Spouse for Someone New

Here’s a cliched version of ‘the grass is always greener…” Quite often, and there might be some just desserts in this, the cheating couple finds out that once they’re no longer sneaking around and enjoying the thrills of illicit love, they’re not so compatible anymore. A lot of the time, that means two wrecked families and a lot of damaged people.
Fame

The money that often comes with being famous can be great. The scrutiny and the loss of privacy that also come with it aren’t so great, and even more so if you’re famous for the wrong reasons.
Being the Boss

Being promoted to management can mean a nice bump in salary, but it also comes with a lot of responsibilities, headaches, and time spent in meetings rather than doing what you love to do. A perfect example of this is the many teachers who get promoted to principal positions only to end up returning to the classroom.
Pool Tables

As with boats, it’s better to have a friend with a pool table than to have a pool table yourself. Pool tables are expensive, they take up space, you probably won’t use them much after the first year, and they’re extraordinarily difficult to remove once they’re installed.
Jobs

When you don’t have a job, you want one. Then when you have one, you kind of wish you didn’t have one anymore. For most of us, they’re necessary evils that pay the bills and buy things we like.
