6 Ways to Save Money At the Supermarket With Simple Swaps

Updated:

With all the inflation going on lately, it may feel like our grocery shopping bills are going through the roof. This means that the cost of food exceeds what we used to pay in the past, and that can sometimes make us feel like we are drowning in grocery bills.

Luckily, there are a few ways in which you can reduce your grocery bills, such as simply swapping certain foods for cheaper versions. Here, we have made a list to help you get started on your path to reducing your monthly grocery bills!

Frozen Fruit and Vegetables Instead of Fresh

Did you know that unless you shop at a farmer’s market or grow your own, frozen fruits and vegetables can sometimes actually be nutritionally superior to fresh ones from the store? The reason for this is that these fruits and vegetables are usually picked when they are at their peak and frozen immediately.

We pay a premium for fresh fruit and vegetables at the supermarket even though they may be days past their peak when they land on the table.

Generic Brands Instead of Brand Names

Sometimes, brand-name foods can be up to 60% more expensive despite the generic brands being the same thing. You can also sometimes tell the difference between brand-name foods and generic ones, but most of the time, that rarely happens. Your grocery bills will feel the difference, though!

Whole Chickens Instead of Chicken Cuts

Purchasing a whole chicken is usually a lot cheaper than going for chicken cuts. Buying the entire chicken also offers numerous meals rather than just one (if your family is small). As a bonus can also use the carcass when the meat has been consumed to make your homemade chicken stock.

Popcorn Kernels Instead of Chips

If you’re an avid snacker but feel that the price of snacks such as chips is getting out of hand, then why not opt for some popcorn kernels? Firstly, they are a whole lot cheaper, and secondly, they are also a far healthier option than chips that are loaded with saturated fats and high levels of sodium.

Oats Instead of Cereal or Granola

Swapping oats for cereal or granola options is not only going to be a lot healthier for you and your family, but it’s also going to save you some bucks on your grocery bills. The nice thing about oats is that they are so versatile, and they pretty much take on the flavor of the things that get added to them.

You could add some (frozen or dried) fruit, nuts, seeds, cinnamon, and whatever else you feel like pairing with your oats.

If you want to be sure to keep your omega-3s and vitamin D intake adequate but don’t want to break the bank by purchasing fresh fish, then why not go for tinned fish instead? There are plenty of canned fish options ranging from salmon, tuna, sardines, anchovies, and so much more!
