A good balance between life and work is something that everything is looking for today. It’s easier to find this in some countries rather than others. Some countries are enacting laws that reinforce this balance.

Some also have generous leave policies that are fully or partially paid by the employer. Having a good work-life balance has been found to lead to more happiness and even better health. According to CompareTheMarket, these countries are the best places to find this balance, and all of them are in Europe.

Spain

Spain is the best place to find the important balance that everyone is looking for. It has the most days of paid annual leave in the world with 30 days a year. Jobs here also come with at least six weeks of fully paid sick leave,16 weeks of fully paid maternity leave, and 12 weeks of paid paternity leave.

Luxembourg

Workers in this small country also get six paid weeks of sick leave, and it pays 100% of the maternity leave and paternity leave given to new parents. However, mothers get 20 weeks of this leave and fathers get just two weeks of it.

France

France wasn’t even in the top 10 back in 2022, but this year it’s third. Workers get 30 days of paid leave plus six weeks of sick leave fully paid every year. It also covers almost all of the pay for maternity and paternity leave with 95.7% of pay for maternity and 96% for paternity.

The Netherlands

At number four, workers have to work the fourth lowest amount of hours each year with 1,427. Paternity leave is just a week, but it’s fully paid. Maternity leave is paid 99% and lasts 16 weeks.

Finland

The people of Finland get the highest score for happiness, and they get 30 paid days of leave yearly. They also get at least six weeks of sick leave annually that are fully paid.

Bulgaria

Eastern Europe has made huge inroads toward becoming a better place to live and work. While all of the Nordic countries used to be on the list, many Eastern European countries have taken their place. Bulgaria offers 58 weeks of paid maternity leave.

Estonia

Eastern Europe is now attracting some of the top talent from around the world due to good working conditions and generous leave policies. Estonia is especially demonstrating its part in the modern, digital world.

Slovenia

It’s a country that isn’t known for very much, but it does have a great work-life balance. Like much of this area of Europe, it’s worked hard to make the country more livable and better to work in.

Lithuania

This country offers fathers four weeks of paid paternity leave and has other generous types of leave as well. It’s a far cry from the U.S. which has no paid maternity or paternity leave at all.

Austria

Austria also offers four paid weeks of paternity leave. The country prides itself on offering employees plenty of leave when they need it and having a great balance of personal life and work.
