15 of the Dumbest Criticisms Millennials Have Heard of Their Generation

Published:

Maybe we’re overreacting, but it seems that Millennials come in for more criticism than any other generation does, even the Boomers. The older generations seem to see us as weak and helpless, and the Gen Zers apparently think we’re old and hopelessly out of touch.

Truthfully, though, there are a lot of “The problem with your generation is…” statements that are downright stupid or infuriating. Here are 15 of them.

Entitlement

Boomers especially like to accuse us of wanting everything handed to us. Well, here’s the funny thing: studies show that every generation finds ensuing ones entitled. Besides, if we do feel entitled, someone made us that way.

Not Knowing How to Play

We weren’t the ones who decided to provide babysitting by devices because our parents were too wrapped up in themselves. Also, we can’t just “go outside” anymore because the streets are a lot more dangerous than they used to be and there’s much less open space.

Not Knowing How to Get Into Trouble

You’ve probably had your dad or an uncle boast to you about all the stupid and reckless things he did that could have landed him in jail or gotten someone killed. With it came the implication that you’re soft. Yet you know perfectly well that if you’d done any of those things, he’d have been deeply unhappy with you.

Never Having Had to Serve

It’s true that we grew up without a draft. So did Gen X. Is it so bad not to have been forced to fight in a war we wanted no part of?

Being Irresponsible With Money

First, if we don’t know how to manage money, it’s because we weren’t taught properly. Second, we’re actually very careful with money thanks to student loans and a job market that puts a lot of barriers before us.

Making Hotel Closets Smaller

It was pretty surreal, but a well-known travel industry writer penned a piece actually connecting smaller closets and other minimalist designs to Millennials. This was based on what a single hotel chain did.

Too Lazy for Keeping Proper Silver Flatware

Boomers lament that we don’t have good flatware because we’re too lazy to keep it polished. Not wanting to waste your time polishing forks is a bad thing?

Killing the China Industry

Related, we’re also apparently destroying the China plates industry. This is because you can’t put it in the dishwasher and we don’t feel like hand-washing it. Again, is that so terrible?

No Dedication to the Company

Someone ought to tell our critics that we’d be more loyal to our jobs if they were more loyal to us. Instead, we have little job security, and we’re often the first to go when a company “downsizes.”

Woefully Unprepared for the Business World

Boomers and Gen Xers in management love to complain about our supposed ineptitude and poor work ethic. Here’s a tip: you could have trained us better, or you could make us feel even slightly worthy and welcome.

Causing Population Decline

Statistics don’t lie: Millennials are waiting longer to have children, and we’re having fewer children. Well, it’s taking longer for us to get out of crushing debt and establish careers. Financial instability and raising children don’t go together well.

Causing Community Decline

We’re also ruining communities because we don’t buy homes and settle down. Have you seen housing prices? A lot of us are priced out of the market. That’s why we’re more transient.

Participation Trophies

News flash: a lot of us think they’re dumb, too, and that they create a false sense of success. But guess what? It wasn’t Millennials who started it.

Driving Chain Restaurants to Ruin

Eating out a lot is expensive. Chain restaurant menus are predictable, but they’re also boring, and the food is mediocre. So what if we’d rather spend our money on better food and niche restaurants and cafes?

Not Caring About Civics

True, younger people don’t vote reliably and aren’t that civically engaged. But perhaps we’d pay more attention and be more involved if our politics weren’t still dominated by old people who have been at each other’s throats nonstop since the 1960s!
