16 Highly Unnecessary Things Adults Waste a Fortune On

Published:

Building wealth and achieving certain financial freedom is a dream that most people wish came true. Sadly, most people cannot achieve their financial goals due to unnecessary spending and poor financial decisions.  Cutting down your expenses won’t make you rich overnight, but it could save you money that you can invest in other income-generating activities.

Here are 16 highly unnecessary things adults waste a fortune on.

Expensive Gym Memberships

Splurging on a monthly gym membership when you hardly have time to go is a good use of money. You may get bored of a similar routine or feel out of place around others. Consider other options like free YouTube videos, working with an online trainer, or walking or running in the park. These options will save you money and give you a variety of activities to explore.

Gourmet Pet Food

Most companies have devised creative ways to get you to spend money on fancy pet foods with buzzwords like all-natural, gran-free, etc. However, some of these labels lack real nutritional value and don’t contain ingredients that your pet needs. Other more affordable pet food options are nutritious and healthier for your furry friend.

Expensive Cleaning Products

Purchasing expensive cleaning products like disinfecting mists, foaming bathroom cleaners, or fabric fresheners may cost hundreds of dollars annually. You can spend a fraction of that cost making your cleaning products at home with readily available ingredients. Mixing equal parts of water and white vinegar makes an all-purpose cleaner for your countertops, bathroom, mirrors, and other areas.

Fast Fashion Brand Name Clothing and Accessories

Most brand-name clothing, shoes, furniture, etc, are expensive and not worth the hype. Some of these fast fashion items could be better quality, and you may need to replace them quickly. Consider purchasing some items from lesser-known brands. In certain cases, products like skincare items and over-the-counter medicine share similar ingredients. That saves you a lot of cash over time.

Trendy Gadgets

Spending money on the latest iPhone, gaming console, or boom speaker may give you the illusion of upgrading your life, but you could be wasting money on rapidly depreciating gadgets. Most gadgets will promise updated specs, but experts warn that the differences between the two versions may be minimal.

The price difference to upgrade may be worth something other than these small updates. Consider using a previous year’s gadget or trading your current device to save money.

Fancy and Expensive Cosmetics

There’s a misconception that expensive and fancy cosmetics are better, but you may be spending a fortune on items you don’t necessarily need. Some expensive cosmetics can even harm your sin. Splurging on every new product that comes to the market wastes money that could be used on essential purchases.

You can find quality makeup and skin care products for a lot less.

Premium Gasoline

Premium gas was previously used to have additives to stop carbon deposits. However, modern gas has all these additives, and you likely won’t need to buy premium gas even if your manufacturer recommends it. Most vehicles are designed to work with regular or premium gasoline.

Premium gas is also expensive and a waste of money if your engine doesn’t need it.

Paying For Unnecessary Insurance

Contrary to popular belief, having more insurance than you need isn’t beneficial. Products like identity theft, collision, rental car, and travel insurance may be costly and unnecessary for most people.

Paying Upfront for Memberships and Subscriptions You Won’t Use

When trying a new product, a few people overspend on paid subscriptions, applications, and streaming services. Unfortunately, they end up not using these services and wasting money. Before fully committing, sign up for a free trial to try a new service or product. That allows you to pay only for subscriptions that add value to your life.

Bank Account Fees

Research by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reveals that Americans incur an estimated $17 billion in bank fees annually for overdrafts and insufficient funds. There are other fees like maintenance, ATM, and other hidden costs on your checking account that you may need to be aware of.

You can find a bank that doesn’t charge for ATM use or make you part with a maintenance fee if your balance drops.

Extended Warranties

Retail shops now offer extended vehicle warranties, appliances, furniture, jewelry, sporting goods, etc. Although buying an extended warranty may sound like a great idea, you often don’t need it. The warranty does not cover most problems you’re likely to incur, while others will duplicate coverage provided by manufacturers.

The extra amount you pay for the extended warranty isn’t worth it, and you’re better off paying cash for repairs or getting a replacement.

Airline Fees for Basic Services

Some people save money on flight add-on extras like picking a seat or checking in a bag. Others will charge you more to upgrade to premium economy. While all these add-ons may seem convenient, they come at an extra cost, and you may not need them.

Evaluate your preferences and the airline’s incentives to determine if you need to pay as much to travel. Beware of extremely cheap tickets as they may cost more than regular flight tickets.

Expensive Alcohol

Ordering shots of top-shelf liquor may look cool and earn you bragging rights, but it’s a waste of money. Opt for something mid-level if you’re out with friends to save money, or host a party with store-bought drinks to socialize with friends at home.

Gambling

Gambling is addictive and fun due to the thrill of how much you can earn. Casinos are designed to trick you into spending more. That lottery ticket or frequent casino trips may be expensive if you keep doing the same thing and not winning.

Expensive Food

Buying caviar on a night out or the most expensive omelet is a waste of money, considering that some of these foods don’t have any special ingredients or unique flavors. You’re likely to find more flavorful and healthier food for a lesser amount.

Fancy Coffee

Although Civet coffee is popular for its perceived rarity and smooth taste, it’s also expensive, with a cup retailing as much as $300. Spending such amounts on a quick caffeine fix isn’t practical. You can make coffee at home with quality coffee beans and use the remaining money to invest or save in a retirement account.

Unnecessary Spending
