The 15 Most Dangerous Countries in the World

Some regions of the world are more dangerous to be in than others. Some regions have widespread instability and have been dangerous for a long time. Others are more dangerous right now because of current conflicts.

The Global Peace Index, or GPI, is a way to rank each country for the danger present in that country. It measures the militarization, ongoing conflict, and safety and security of a nation. According to World Population Review, these are the most dangerous countries in the world.

Afghanistan

With a GPI of 3.448, Afghanistan is a highly dangerous place to be. It has endured decades of wars and battles and has a very unstable government. The drug trade also adds to the danger.

Yemen

Yemen has a great deal of political instability, leaving people vulnerable to a lot of danger from rival factions. It’s been warring for years and is dangerous enough to have a GPI of 3.350.

Syria

A dangerous place to live, Syria has a great deal of instability and rival factions that are battling for control and territory. It has a high level of violence, and the public isn’t safe. It has a GPI of 3.294.

South Sudan

A relatively new country, this nation was forged from years of civil war. It’s unstable and corrupt, and it has a problem with violent gangs. It has a GPI of 3.221 for the danger it poses to its citizens.

This country is notoriously dangerous. It’s faced years of war and rival factions fighting, and it’s an unstable place to live that can easily erupt into violence. It has a GPI of 3.214.

Russia

Both Russia and Ukraine have become much more dangerous in the past two years. The war between these two countries has made both countries highly dangerous to be in. Russia has a GPI of 3.142.

Ukraine

Because the war with Russia is being fought largely in Ukraine, there are few places more dangerous to be in the world than in this country. It has a GPI of 3.043.

Somalia

Many areas in Sub-Saharan Africa suffer from civil war and rival factions fighting. Somalia has seen many years of war and armed groups fighting for territory. It has a GPI of 3.036.

Sudan

Sudan has seen many years of civil war and an unstable government. It faces many groups seeking power and has a problem with corruption. It has a GPI of 3.023.

Iraq

Iraq has been embroiled in war for a long time, and it’s currently the home to rival groups trying to take power. It has seen a lot of political instability and violence. It has a GPI of 3.006.

Mali

Like many other African nations, Mali has had to deal with instability and corruption as well as groups of armed militants. The public is often the target of these groups. It has a GPI of 2.963.

Central African Republic

Another unstable area in Africa, this country suffers from poverty and a total of six coups that have each had their effects. It’s a dangerous place that can be unpredictable. It has a GPI of 2.934.

Ethiopia

A civil war and widespread poverty and famine have led this country to be one of the most dangerous. Fighting factions is the norm, and violence is everywhere. It has a GPI of 2.872.

Following close behind Ethiopia is this Western African nation. It’s seen unprecedented violence in the past few years as multiple coups and militant groups have made the entire country a dangerous place. It has a GPI of 2.868.

Personal safety is hard to find in this dictatorship. The high degree of militarization of the country, mixed with extreme poverty, has made this place unsafe for anyone. It has a GPI of 2.848.
