Survival situations can be incredibly challenging, and knowing the correct information can mean the difference between life and death. Unfortunately, many survival myths exist that can lead you down the wrong path and put your life at risk.

Here, we debunk 15 common survival myths that could potentially get you killed

It’s a common belief that tampons can be used to plug gunshot wounds due to their size and shape. However, this is a dangerous misconception. Tampons are not designed to promote blood clotting like medical gauze. Using them can worsen the situation.

2. Rocks for Cooking

Using river rocks as a cooking surface can be disastrous. When subjected to high heat, rocks can explode, especially if they contain moisture. This could lead to severe burns or injuries.

Contrary to popular belief, covering up during both day and night is essential in the desert. The sun can cause burns and dehydration during the day, while nighttime temperatures can drop significantly, leading to hypothermia.

4. Zig Zag Escape

Running in a zigzag pattern to escape an alligator is futile. Alligators don’t chase prey for long distances, and this tactic will only waste your energy. They can also climb fences and trees, making zigzagging ineffective.

5. Cactus Water

Drinking liquid from a cactus is not a viable water source. Cactus fluids are highly acidic and can cause nausea and diarrhea, exacerbating dehydration.

6. Follow Birds to Find Water

Trusting flying birds to lead you to water is unreliable. Birds may fly for various reasons, not necessarily to find water sources.

Stretching a glass of water over multiple days when you’re thirsty is a dangerous practice. Dehydration can lead to severe health issues, so drink when you need to

Rubbing frostbitten skin or using hot water to warm it up can cause further damage. Seek medical help and use gentle warming methods instead.

The idea that moss grows on the north side of a tree is not a foolproof method for navigation. Moss can grow all over a tree, making it an unreliable indicator.

10. Splitting Up

Splitting up to cover more ground when lost is a risky decision. Staying together increases your chances of being found and rescued.

Not everything animals eat is safe for humans. Consuming whatever animals eat can lead to ingesting toxic plants, berries, or mushrooms, with potentially deadly consequences.

Assuming water is clean just because it looks clear is a grave mistake. Always boil or distill water in the wild to ensure it’s safe to drink.

Foraging for food is crucial in survival situations, but avoid mushrooms unless you’re an expert. Edible mushrooms can be difficult to distinguish from poisonous ones, posing a severe risk.
