Methodology
Preply surveyed 1,000 people. This reduces the margin of error and helps make more informed decisions based on the data collected. This enables us to draw stronger inferences about population perceptions as a whole.
On January 5, 2025, they surveyed 998 Americans on their experiences and preferences with learning on social media platforms. Respondents ranged in age from 18 to 76 years old, and were 49% female, 50% male, and 1% nonbinary.
Health and Wellness
If you’ve ever been to social media, you’ll have seen plenty of health and wellness topics being talked about. Among Americans, about 80% of the people on social media have learned about these topics there.
Cooking and Baking
It’s always useful to learn more about making food, and social media can be a huge help. About 78% of Americans learned more about these topics on social media networks.
Technology
Everyone could use more information about technology, and it’s available everywhere on social media. About 72% of those on social media will learn about technology in some form.
Finance
Finance is another useful topic that everyone could use more knowledge about. On social media, 64% of people learned more about money and how it works.
Cultures
There’s no end to the amount of people you can learn from through social media, and they’re from countries around the world. About 63% of people on social media learn about various cultures.
Travel
The picture-heavy way that social media operates makes it easy to see travel destinations from around the world. About 59% of social media users learn about amazing places to travel.
Home Care and Improvement
Countless social media accounts are all about the home and taking good care of it. From cleaning and organizing to improving the home, about 59% of people learned about it.
Relationships
Social media is arguably a bad place to learn more about relationships, but some people do manage to find good information. About 52% of Americans learn more about them on social media.
Fashion and Beauty
There’s no shortage of fashion and beauty accounts. Many people are all about these posts and learning things like makeup techniques and styling tips. About 51% of people learn these topics.
Pet Care and Training
All pet owners could learn more about their pets and how to best care for them. These types of posts usually have pictures of cute animals. About 47% of people learn about these topics.
Career
Social media is the perfect place to pick up career tips from those who have been there as well as to network with others. About 42% of people learn more to help their careers on social media.
Artistic Skills
The artists among us are always looking to increase their skills and make better creations. When you need to build your artistic skills, there’s always advice on this topic on social media. About 38% learn more about how to do what they love through social media.
Parenting
Parenting is a never-ending learning process that changes as children get older and develop new skills. Social media has a lot of parenting advice from both experts and amateurs. About 30% of people increase their parenting knowledge there.
Language Learning
Learning a new language is a great way to spend time. It allows for better communication and more knowledge about the world. About 27% of Americans learn a language through social media.
