20 Things That Are Extremely Overrated- They Just Don’t Live Up to the Hype

Published:

It’s a fact of life that a lot of things people talk up as being great fall far short of the hype. Sometimes, those things turn out to be not just overrated but also unpleasant or harmful.

Following is an assortment of things that often turn out to be a lot more disappointing than you thought they’d be; you might consider passing on some of them.

Social Media Influencers

What do they do? How do they earn money? Why? And, since everyone you know seems to hate influencers, who are the millions of people giving them oxygen?

Designer Shoes and Handbags

They look great, especially when they’re brand-new, and you might get some admiring glances. After a while, though, you realize they don’t provide superior comfort or function to quality brands without the designer label, so all that extra money was just for show.

Las Vegas

It can be a lot of fun, and there’s much more than just gambling to enjoy. Plus, you might win big. For most people, however, the sights and the sounds wear thin after a few days and you realize it’s not as great as you thought.

Starbucks

If you like the coffee and don’t mind paying the prices for it, fine. But unless you’re a devotee or you only go once in a while, ask yourself if the coffee tastes good enough to justify all that money you’re spending on it.

The Kardashians

Are they still a thing? Why were they ever a thing in the first place? A lot of people confess to hate watching them now rather than caring about what they’re up to.

The kids seem addicted to it. Everyone else, though, or just about everyone else, watches it for a bit and then feels as though they’re drowning in inanity. Plus, there are serious security and privacy concerns.

Politicians

You might be thinking, “Wait, politicians are well-regarded?” Well, the joke is that they aren’t, but even so, they’re still overrated.

Huge Homes

Unless you have a large family, there’s way more space than you need. The mortgage payment is massive, maybe leaving you house poor. And there’s a lot of square footage to clean or pay good money to someone else to clean.

Boats and RVs

Both of these can be a blast for sure, so that’s not the problem. It’s that after the initial period of owning them, you probably won’t use them that much. They also cost a lot of money to maintain and store, and most subdivisions don’t allow you to keep them at home.

Adulting

When we were young, we couldn’t wait to be adults because it seemed so great. No more rules, no one telling you what to do, earning your own money, and so on. Once you got there, you realized life was a lot better when you were a kid.

Even the dearest friends and relatives wear on you after a bit, and to be fair, your ways start to wear on them. The limit differs for everyone, but a long weekend to a week is generally a good basis to use.

Superhero Movies

Visually spectacular and packed full of action, these movies tend to do well at the box office, and some are very good. After you’ve seen a few, though, you realize they all have the same basic plot, everything’s predictable, and the special effects are carrying most of the load.

Your 20s

Sure, this is when most people are in their physical prime. But then there’s job insecurity, struggling to pay rent, not being taken seriously by older colleagues, higher insurance rates, and other things that keep your 20s from being what they’re cracked up to be.

iPhones

They were innovative and exciting once upon a time. Now, they’re massively overpriced, Apple grooms you to buy the newest version every year or two, and you have many other good options to choose from.

Hookup Culture

All the physical benefits of relationships without emotional commitments and responsibilities might sound great, but the truth is darker. People who fall into it tend to be lonelier, more prone to depression, and awkward at establishing meaningful relationships.

New Cars

It’s a great feeling to drive a brand-new car off the lot, but as you do so, you lose thousands of dollars of value. You’re better off buying a model that’s one or two years old and in excellent condition.

Traveling for Work

People often see those who travel a lot for work as having an exciting, glamorous life. In reality, it often leads to burnout and homesickness, and it’s hard on families.

Clubbing

Going out for a night of clubbing with friends sounds like great fun. Then you get there and can’t hear or think due to the blasting techno music as you squeeze your way through a horde of strangers.

Alcohol

Alcohol is a deeply ingrained part of our culture, and we’re not going to preach against it, but remember to enjoy it in moderation. Excessive drinking is expensive, bad for your health both short- and long-term, and something that can lead you into embarrassing (or illegal) situations you could pay the price for years.

Fast Food

Yes, it’s convenient, and some of it is tasty. It’s also horribly unhealthy for you. One of its strongest selling points for the longest time was being cheap, but over the past several years, it’s gotten a lot more expensive and isn’t that much of a bargain anymore.

As we grow older, our tolerance for certain things diminishes, leading us to develop a stronger aversion to various aspects of life.

We’ve compiled a list of 15 things we tend to hate more as we age.
