The 13 Most Violent Countries in the World

Many countries have extremely high levels of violence and some don’t. There are a lot of ways to choose which are the most violent. This list was decided by the Global Peace Index (GPI) which was designed by the Institute for Economics & Peace.

It uses many different metrics, such as societal safety and security as well as the militarization of each country. According to World Population Review, these countries have the highest levels of violence in the world.

Afghanistan

Various factions fighting each other as well as the drug trade have caused a lot of violence in Afghanistan. It has a GPI of 3.448 for the many problems with public safety and the many skirmishes that happen there.

Yemen

Another highly volatile area, Yemen has a lot of problems with rival factions, an unstable government, and area-wide conflicts. Yemen has a GPI of 3.350 for its extensive amount of violence.

Syria

Rival groups are also a problem here as various organizations battle each other. Region-wide conflicts have made Syria ground zero for a lot of conflicts. It has a GPI of 3.294.

South Sudan

With a GPI of 3.221, instability has long been a problem for South Sudan. Wracked with decades of civil war and internal conflicts, this country has always been unstable and full of violence.

This region of the world tends to have a high level of militarization and a lot of conflicts. With a GPI of 3.214, this country is known for its violence and high level of instability.

Russia

Organized crime is a huge problem in Russia, as is general corruption at all levels of government. The country being at war has also raised its level of violence. It has a GPI of 3.142.

Ukraine

In the middle of a war on its soil, Ukraine is suffering from constant violence. The public isn’t safe, cities aren’t safe, and the country has become unstable. It currently has a GPI of 3.043.

Somalia

War and internal fighting have been harsh in Somalia, raising its level of violence considerably. This African country sees chronic violence and instability. It has a GPI of 3.036.

Sudan

Civil war has taken a serious toll on this African nation. War and poverty have led to widespread violence that has left society highly unsafe. Sudan has a GPI of 3.023.

Iraq

War, takeovers, an unstable government, poverty, and rival factions fighting have all had their effect on the safety of this country. The violence has led to Iraq having a GPI of 3.006.

Mali

Like many African countries, poverty and the drug trade have made an impact on the safety of this nation. Its unsafe society has led this country to have a GPI of 2.963.

Central African Republic

Many rival factions and poverty have caused this country to be unstable and violent. Coup after coup has led the country to be unsteady and unable to keep people safe. It has a GPI of 2.934.

Ethiopia

The drug trade and poverty strike again in this African country. The country has weathered extreme poverty, civil war, and famines, making peace hard to find. It has a GPI of 2.872.

Some states are safer than others, and this is a big influence on where people move. Places with a low level of public safety have a lot of crime, and this can prevent the public from wanting to move there and even visit.
