Published:

If you are sick and tired of living in cluttered spaces but have no idea how to fix them, fear not because we are here to help. It may feel like a massive undertaking to declutter your home, but, if you just take one step at a time and stick to the plan, it’s not impossible!

Here, we have outlined a five-day challenge that you can follow to declutter your home. You don’t have to accomplish this in five days straight, and you can even just do one day in one week or on the weekend if that suits you best as long as you create a schedule for when you will be following through with which days.

Day 1: Declutter Living Room

Since we spend a lot of time relaxing and winding down in our living rooms, it could be a good idea to get started with the decluttering here first. It’s always best to start decluttering by removing or rehoming items that don’t belong. This will make cleaning further down the line a lot simpler as there will be fewer surfaces around to clean.

After removing these out-of-place items, you can assess blankets, pillows, and other decor items to see if they still belong, and lastly, you can clean the living room.

Day 2: Declutter the Kitchen

The kitchen is another high-traffic zone, so it would be best to tackle this area fairly early on in your decluttering mission. Start removing things from your countertops unless they are there for decoration. It’s best to keep the countertop open for when you need to prepare food.

Next, you can see if there are any utensils or appliances that you no longer use and put them in a box for donation. Lastly, you can undertake the pantry and fridge to get rid of any expired foods.

Day 3: Declutter Bathrooms

Decluttering your bathrooms shouldn’t take too long, but it is nonetheless a crucial step in your home decluttering mission. It’s helpful to go through all drawers and medicine cabinets to see which things you no longer use or may be expired. You can also get rid of old, raggedy towels and foot mats.

Day 4: Declutter the Bedroom and Storage Closets

It’s so easy for the bedroom or storage closets to get crowded with clutter as these areas are private, and we tend to store a lot of things here that none of our guests will ever see. The nightstand can easily get cluttered with things, so it’s best to start here and, from there, move on to your drawers and cupboards and, lastly, the storage closets to sort out any items that are in the wrong places or any clothing items that you have not worn for several years.

It’s best to donate any clothes you no longer find value in and don’t be too sad to say goodbye to these items. If you donate them, there will be a purpose for these beloved items with their new owners.

Day 5: Declutter Garage and Office

Now that all the major zones in your home are out of the way, it’s time to tackle the office and garage. The office should be quick and easy, although we can’t speak for everyone’s garage. It may take a bit longer, but it’s important to be strict and get rid of any items that you haven’t used in a long time or know that you won’t need them anytime soon.

One could say that bathrooms are equal parts utility and sanctuary. Essentially, they’re the place where you can light a candle and wind down from a long day, but at the same time, it’s the exact spot where most of your grooming and getting ready for your day (or bed) happens. In terms of aesthetics, we do want our bathrooms to feel welcoming and serene, but, at the same time, they need to be functional.
