15 Home Trends That Are Just Overdone and Overrated

Published:

The home design trends that are so popular today will be out of style tomorrow. The “in” styles usually start at the designer level before trickling down to the public.

It’s helpful to look ahead at the next trends when having work done for your home.

What’s in today among the public may already be on its way out and no longer be used by designers.

These have been everywhere for the last few years, but they’re on the way out. Light, airy, non-gray colors are coming into style as people are getting tired of their gray floors.

Cheery Signs

You’ve seen them on walls- “Live, Laugh, Love” and “It’s Wine O’Clock!” are popular styles. These cheerful signs are quickly on the way out and are being seen as tacky by many people.

Barn Doors

This unsightly fad has been in style for years inside homes that feature heavy hardware prominently. These doors have become an annoyance to many, and they’re rapidly going out of style.

Kitchen Open Shelving

Instead of having upper cabinets, some kitchens have been outfitted with open shelving, and it’s been a hassle ever since. Oil in the air of the kitchen settles into everything on the shelves as well as house dust. No one wants to clean a bunch of open shelving.

Modern Farmhouse Style

This style caught on with designers and has been pushed in practically every housing market. However, people are getting tired of pretending their kitchen is on a farm and are opting to change many of the farmhouse features.

Monochrome Gray Rooms

Gray has been popular in a big way, and that’s true of virtually every detail of a room. Many rooms have gone to having everything gray. However, people are starting to want more color in their homes and less looking like an old sitcom.

Butlers’ Pantries

When you have this style, but there’s no butler, that makes you the butler. These little mini-kitchen areas aren’t necessary and take up a lot of room. They also cause you to be your own butler.

Open Concept

The open-concept home has seen so much popularity that it’s finally starting to wane. More people are finding that they like having walls and doors to mark off certain areas and to have more privacy.

Shiplap Walls

Even if the designers on HGTV are still using it, shiplap on every wall is going out of style. It’s been so overdone that people are looking for different designs and textures to add to a room.

Brass Hardware

The look of the ‘80s came back big time with brass hardware being put on everything. It’s on the way out now as people are looking for other colors and finishes to make a different statement.

Bubbly Furniture

This type of furniture is supposed to look much like a cloud. It uses shapes and textures that give a specific, fluffy look that people are getting tired of. It’s quickly being replaced by non-fluffy pieces.

Quartz That Looks Like Marble

Many people have gotten quartz countertops that look like marble as a cheaper way to get the same look. However, quartz doesn’t have to look like that. It can be its own thing that doesn’t mimic something else.

White Rooms With Black Hardware

This creates a lot of contrast and visual interest, but it’s getting old. People are interested in trying different colors rather than keeping a room solid white to fit that aesthetic.

Waterfall Countertops

These countertops have the material go all the way down on the sides like a waterfall. It’s a great way to show off high-quality materials, but it’s starting to look like a fad that’s on the way out.

Painted Brick

The classic beauty of brick is completely lost when it’s painted. Bricks are being painted both indoors and out to fit into this fad. The problem is, it can cause moisture problems and will be out of style soon.

One could say that bathrooms are equal parts utility and sanctuary. Essentially, they’re the place where you can light a candle and wind down from a long day, but at the same time, it’s the exact spot where most of your grooming and getting ready for your day (or bed) happens. In terms of aesthetics, we do want our bathrooms to feel welcoming and serene, but, at the same time, they need to be functional.
