The word burnout is used frequently in the 21st century, but does anyone actually know how to define it? Burnout is an unfortunate state of mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion, usually caused by excessive and prolonged periods of stress.

You’ll know that you’re burnt out when you constantly feel emotionally drained, overwhelmed, and unable to meet your demands adequately. It starts slowly, but as stress and tension continue, you slowly lose motivation and interest in even the simplest tasks.

Over time, burnout saps your energy and reduces your overall productivity, which may leave you feeling increasingly hopeless, cynical, and resentful. You may even reach a point where you have absolutely nothing left to give.

Fear not if any of this sounds like you because we are here to help. You should also know that you are not alone, as many people experience this in our fast-paced world. Luckily, a few steps can be taken to get yourself back to normal, and if you read on, you will learn more about how to deal with burnout.

1. Self-Care

Burnout occurs when we forget to put ourselves first. If you ever feel burnt out, prioritizing self-care is crucial, which means slowing down and finding ways to replenish your emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

This can be accomplished by toning down all the taxing activities and turning your focus to more relaxing or energizing practices. Quality sleep, exercise, a healthy diet, social connection, and other calming practices such as yoga, deep breathing, meditation, and journaling can all help you get back on track.

2. Reduce Stressors

It’s all well and good to introduce calming practices that focus on self-care but to really get out of a burnout phase, you need to step away from the things that caused it in the first place. This could involve recentering your expectations and demands in your everyday life.

It may be difficult to reduce the things that cause you stress, but it’s truly the only way that you can move on from burnout. You may also need to target highly valued relationships and activities, which can all trigger unhealthy stress if they require too much energy from us.

3. Seek Out Connections

Seeking out interpersonal interactions is another way to deal with a burnout phase. You can begin by spending more quality time with loved ones, such as close family and friends, and try to focus on the relationships that bring you up instead of dragging you down.

The last thing you need is to spend time with people who are pessimistic. Instead, you need people around you who have positive outlooks on life. You may also need to seek out a coach or a professional mentor who can assist you in identifying things that need attention and activate constructive ways of dealing with burnout if you can’t seem to get yourself back on the right path again.
