15 U.S. Cities Yet to Submit Tax Returns

Paying taxes is universally disliked, and in the U.S., it’s often avoided because of how complicated it can get. Some cities have far more procrastinators than others. The cities that have a lot of procrastinators are going to have some very nervous people as soon as the deadline for filing starts closing in.

According to IPX 1031, these are the cities that have the most tax procrastinators.

In January 2024, IPX 1031 conducted a survey of 1,005 people from around the U.S. Among respondents, 49% identified as male and 49% as female. Respondents aged in range from 18-77 with an average age of 41.

To rank the states and cities, they analyzed 418 Google search terms relating to the tax filing deadline from January-September 2023. They took the average number of monthly searches for each state and city and calculated the searches per 100,000 residents.

Baltimore, Maryland

Something about this bustling city makes people unwilling to get their taxes done right away. They are the most likely people in the country to be procrastinating on their taxes.

Denver, Colorado

The Mile-High City has so many great activities to do that people aren’t putting a lot of their attention on their taxes. With those mountain views, it’s no wonder that people don’t want to be hunched over a computer doing their taxes.

People in Boston are just too busy to get their taxes done. People in Boston always seem to be in a hurry, but that doesn’t include being in a hurry to do their taxes. Get to it, Boston!

Seattle, Washington

You’d think the frequent rain would keep people inside so they can focus on their taxes. However, this hasn’t been the case. Seattlites are procrastinating at a high rate.

In this good-time city, the entertainment never stops. That may be what’s keeping the people of this city from doing their taxes. Why stay in and do taxes when you can go and see a show?

The natural beauty of Portland combined with its urban lifestyle is something that a lot of people seek out. However, many of those people haven’t gotten around to doing their taxes yet.

With plenty of natural beauty in this city, it’s understandable that people would rather spend time outdoors than inside doing their taxes. The procrastinators of this city are waiting until the very last minute.
