Some cities are becoming notorious for their trash, while others are extremely clean and pleasant. Around the world, some cities are so clean that they practically sparkle. Who doesn’t want to be in a clean city?

If you know where the cleanest cities are, you’ll know where you’d like to visit and enjoy.

According to World Population Review, these are the cleanest cities in the world as determined by the amount of trash, the water quality, the overall quality of life, environmental performance, and the air quality.

Best Life analyzed 200 of the world’s largest cities to determine which were the cleanest. The analysis included air pollution levels (both PM10 and PM2.5), the quality of life ranking according to Mercer, the country’s Environmental Performance Index, and whether the city has a spot on Monocle’s Quality of Life survey. Not all cities on the list have a Mercer and Monocle ranking.

The cleanest city in the world has a clean city score of 74.94. From the Thames to the Tower to the London Eye, this city is a pleasure to be in thanks to its high level of cleanliness.

Paris, France

Paris is a cosmopolitan city that attracts visitors from all over the world. It has a clean city score of 74.90, making it a close second to London. Parisians care about their city, and they keep it clean.

New York, New York, U.S.

Following closely behind is New York with a score of 74.89. The city has good environmental policies and is largely free of litter. The amazing blending of cultures in New York takes place in a highly clean city.

There’s nothing like the stunning sights in Madrid, and litter doesn’t get in the way of those sights. Madrid has a clean city score of 72.66 and a high quality of life score.

Auckland, New Zealand

With a very high score for environmental performance and very low air pollution, Auckland is the place to be. It has an overall clean city score of 71.97 for its helpful policies, low pollution, and good quality of life.

The Germans like order and tidiness, and this is evident in the city of Hamburg. The city has a score of 71.32 and has a high quality of life score and low air pollution for a clean way of life.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is an amazing city, and it’s one of the cleanest in the world. It has an overall score of 70.46 for cleanliness. It has a very high environmental performance score as well as a great quality of life rating.

Berlin, Germany

Being clean is a part of the culture in Germany. Berlin has a clean city score of 70.28 and a high environmental performance score. Berliners can breathe easily knowing they have low air pollution.

With a high environmental performance score and the rare dropping of litter, Vienna is a clean city with a high quality of life and clean air. The city is also one of the most beautiful in Europe and has a clean city score of 70.17.

With a score of 68.89, Sapporo is known as a clean city with low air pollution. It’s a great place to visit in Japan and a clean place to live. Seeing trash is rare in this well-functioning city.

Believe it or not, Los Angeles is a very clean city. It has an overall score of 64.99 and has very low air pollution. The City of Angels also has a high score for its environmental performance.

Chicago is highly populated, but it has quite low air pollution. The city has a score of 64.39 for its overall cleanliness. It ties with Los Angeles for its excellent environmental policies and performance.
