Can you believe that about 40% of used vehicles fail their initial road test inspection? When we delved deeper, we uncovered an intriguing story within this statistic – the ‘underdogs’ of the car industry, the brands that often fail road tests, might still be a good fit for certain drivers.

The International Drivers Association team has published an article examining the crossroads of road safety and consumer choice.

Based on Trafficom’s data, roughly 40% of used vehicles fail their first road test inspection due to significant safety concerns. The European Transport Safety Council reported that numerous cars fail to meet road safety standards yearly. But does this statistic suggest that these cars are a poor investment?

1. Fiat

According to a report from WhoCanFixMyCar, Fiat models rank low in road tests due to their lackluster performance and reliability problems. However, an article from ChooseMyCar suggests that their chic Italian design, compact size perfect for city driving, and affordable maintenance costs make them worth considering.

2. Land Rover

Despite failing numerous road tests due to reliability issues and high maintenance costs, as per a post from Jerry, its luxurious aesthetics, unparalleled off-road capabilities, and impressive safety features make it an attractive brand for adventure seekers.

3. Chrysler

As noted by CarsGuide, Chrysler models often score low on road tests due to reliability and performance problems. However, a Reddit post suggests that their vehicles feature spacious interiors and designs suitable for families, which are key considerations for family car buyers.

4. Jeep

Per an article from Service4Service, Jeeps typically struggle in road tests due to inconsistent performance and reliability issues. Despite this, they’re known for their off-road capabilities, unique design aesthetic, and loyal fan base.

5. Alfa Romeo

As mentioned in Medium, Alfa Romeo’s poor reliability has been a common complaint. However, its aesthetic appeal, thrilling performance, and rich automotive history make this Italian brand appealing to car enthusiasts.

6. Maserati
