There are many things that are illegal and for good reasons. However, there are plenty of things that are legal that maybe shouldn’t be. How many times have you looked at something and thought- this should be illegal?
Some of these things are a bit tongue-in-cheek- after all, should the government really make these things illegal? However, many of these things exist because of weak legislation, corruption, or bad legislation, and they should be made illegal. People don’t even know some things are legal because they assume they are already illegal.
These are the legal things that should (almost all) absolutely be made illegal.
Making It Nearly Impossible to Cancel a Subscription
Many companies are making it harder and harder to cancel your subscriptions simply so that many people will give up and keep it. Others have taken to making you call a phone number to cancel, which many are not willing to do.
Insurance Companies Over Doctors
When the doctor insists that something is necessary, but the insurance company disagrees, guess who often wins? It should be illegal for these companies to try to override the care that doctors prescribe.
Politicians Buying Stocks
Since they have some level of control over the economic landscape, many people believe they shouldn’t be involved in buying or selling stocks. Some politicians have been accused of buying a particular stock before favorable legislation was passed and reaping the benefits.
Politicians Voting for Their Own Pay Raises
Shouldn’t it be up to the people they serve to decide whether they deserve a raise? When presented with an opportunity to raise their own salaries, they generally vote for it, even when the government is struggling with money.
Banks Shouldn’t Be Too Big to Fail
If a bank is so big that its failing would wreck the economy, it should probably be under government regulation. Where are the anti-trust cases when it comes to huge banks?
Different Prices for Insurance Company and the Public
Chances are, your doctor gets much less when paid by the insurance company than they would if you paid them directly. Insurance companies are able to press doctors for lower prices, but the public doesn’t have that power.
Products Made for Planned Obsolescence
Things used to be made to last as long as possible. This made them sought after and kept quality high. Today, the name of the game is planned obsolescence. The item won’t last long, so you’ll have to buy another one soon. It’s more money for the manufacturer and more hassle for everyone else.
Keeping People Part-Time to Avoid Offering Benefits
It’s common for low-paying companies to keep people part-time or even barely part-time so that they don’t have to pay them any benefits. It would be hard to prove that this is the reason, but maybe it’s time to make this practice illegal.
No Up-Front Pricing in Medicine
Try to ask a doctor’s office how much you’ll pay for a medical test or even just a visit. They often say they aren’t sure, so you often end up paying whatever you’re charged later. You could even get bills coming in for months for different components of your visit.
Pop-Up Ads
Has anyone ever liked getting pop-up ads? Today’s pop-ups are getting smarter, but they’re not getting less annoying. There should be a federal law against them.
Ads in Apps With Fake Demos
We’ve all seen the ads that beckon you to play the demo while you’re waiting for the ad to be over. The problem is that, increasingly, these demos are fake. Clicking there simply takes you to the app store to get their game.
Blinding Headlights
Are headlights getting brighter? Some of them seem to be. When you have an oncoming vehicle with overly bright headlights, it can actually temporarily blind you, not allowing you to see the road ahead of you and the other vehicles on it.
Not Flushing the Toilet in Public
If you don’t flush at home, hey- you do you. But in public? Not flushing should be illegal. It’s an uncivilized way to behave in public, and it can spread disease as well as gross everyone out.
Telemarketing
No one is interested in buying what they sell, so why do they keep calling? It’s also becoming increasingly likely that the telemarketing call you get is just a scam trying to lighten your wallet.
Ads for Pharmaceuticals
There aren’t many positives when it comes to these ads. The side effects can alarm people who take the drug, and many of them are gross. People need to be able to rely on their doctors to tell them which medications to take instead of consumers relying on ads that try to convince them.
