The 15 U.S. Cities That Are the Least Susceptible to a Flu Outbreak

Published:

People need to get their flu vaccination every year to keep more people from having this highly contagious condition. The flu shot is very effective in preventing the flu, and it’s easy to find a place to get one. Some areas will even give free flu shots to those who want them.

Those over 65, in particular, are advised to get the flu vaccine because it isn’t as easy to heal at that age.

While an average of 50.7% of people aged 65 and over were vaccinated, the range highly fluctuates depending on the city.  When a given year’s flu vaccines can be matched to the spreading virus strains, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims 40-60% efficacy in reducing flu cases, which is a pretty high number.

SmartAsset analyzed Medicare data to rank 100 cities based on the percentage of seniors who received the flu shot in 2023. This data is based on those who are Medicare enrollees, so we don’t have data on those not enrolled in Medicare, but we can extrapolate based on the data we do have.

According to SmartAsset, these are the cities with the highest rates of flu vaccinations for that age group.
