15 States Whose Residents Are Super Uneducated

There are a lot of criteria to look at to determine the least educated among all the states. Some of them include the number of people with degrees, the number of high school dropouts, the average ACT and SAT scores, and the number of people in the state’s adult education programs

All of these criteria and more were used by Teach Simple to find the states with the worst education records.

New Mexico

With low scores across the board, New Mexico comes in dead last. It scores especially low for high school academic achievement. It doesn’t rank as low for adult education, but it comes out at the bottom for virtually everything else.

West Virginia

They say West Virginia is the best Virginia, but that doesn’t count for education. It ranks second to last for its very low ranking for higher education as well as its low overall academic achievement.

Oklahoma

In Oklahoma, ACT and SAT scores are low, and there’s not much in the way of high school achievement. The state also scores very low for adult education and has the lowest score for overall academic achievement of all the states.

Nevada

Nevada is among the very worst states for high school success and extremely low for adult learning. It also has a high percentage of high school dropouts, bringing its ranking down.

Mississippi

Mississippi has made a big push in recent years to improve its education and achievement. It’s no longer in last place in the country. It is last, however, for adult education.

Arizona

With the second-worst level of high school success, the educational system isn’t looking great in Arizona. It isn’t ranked that lowly for higher education, but those high school numbers leave a lot to be desired.

Louisiana

In Louisiana, the ranking for adult education isn’t as bad as some states, but it’s not impressive. It also scores quite low for high school success and is very low for higher education.

Texas

Texas ranks at the very bottom for adult education programs, though it doesn’t rank badly for higher education. It’s in the middle of the pack for its high school achievement and success.

South Carolina

Its overall academic achievement score is close to the very bottom of the country. It doesn’t rank well for adult education, and it’s in the middle for high school success.

Alaska

Alaska ranks better than several states for its overall academic achievement. It ranks low for higher education. The state ranks higher than some for its number of adults in continuing education.

Alabama

Like Mississippi, Alabama has made a push toward improving its overall educational success. It ranks pretty high for high school success, though it is very low for adult education.

Arkansas

Arkansas doesn’t rank that badly for adult education, but it’s extremely low for its number of people who’ve had higher education. Its high school success scores are fairly high.

Hawaii

It may be paradise, but it isn’t the place to go for the best education. The state ranks close to the bottom for overall academic achievement, though it has a good score for higher education.

Georgia

In Georgia, it doesn’t rank too low across the board, but it does have one very important low score. It has the worst scores in the country for adult continuing education.

Tennessee

This state ranks among the very lowest for adult education and not at all great for higher education. It ranks pretty well, though, for overall high school success.

Some states have a high population density and many population centers. Others are mostly rural and may have little population. The difference between the top and bottom states in terms of population is enormous.
