Extreme weather can happen just about anywhere, and every area needs to be prepared for it. However, not all of them are. Some states are behind where they need to be to stay prepared for the worst that Mother Nature can throw at them.
The states were assessed for their number of properties at risk, climate extremes index, infrastructure, and the amount of renewable energy being used. According to Planet Anomaly, these are the states that are the most and least prepared.
The Most Prepared States

These states are largely ready for weather anomalies that can cause extensive damage to an area. They’re better prepared than other states just in case the worst should happen.
Iowa

Iowa has an exceptionally small number of properties at risk from extreme weather at just 3%. It also has a low score for the risk of extreme weather, and it has an enormous amount of renewable energy being used.
South Dakota

This is a state that has a lower score for its susceptibility to extreme weather. Only 9% of properties are at risk of this happening. It also uses a massive 84% renewable energy, the highest amount on this list.
Minnesota

Minnesota has only 3% of its properties at risk for severe weather. It has a low score for its tendency to attract extreme weather. Its renewable energy is getting better with about 35% of it being renewable.
Oklahoma

This state has 47% of its energy in renewable forms. It also has a relatively low climate extremes index. However, 32% of its properties are at risk for extreme weather.
Kansas

With 48% of its energy being from renewable sources, this state is ready in case of major disasters. Only 16% of its properties are at risk of these disasters, and it has a relatively low risk of this type of weather.
The Least Prepared States

These states have enormous numbers of properties at risk of unpredictable weather and use very low amounts of renewable energy. These states have major trouble when disaster strikes.
Louisiana

In this state, only about 4% of the energy used is from renewable sources. This, combined with the 60% of properties that are at risk of extreme weather means the state is very poorly prepared for it.
Florida

Florida has the highest number of properties at risk of extreme weather at 61%. Its renewable energy makes up only 13% of all the energy used in the state. The risk is so great that many insurance companies have stopped insuring Florida properties.
Connecticut

In Connecticut, only 8% of the energy used is from renewable sources. It also has 41% of its properties susceptible to extreme weather and a moderate risk for severe weather.
Delaware

With just 8% of its energy being from renewable sources and a full 53% of its properties at risk of weather damage, this state would have a lot of trouble after an extreme weather event. It’s unprepared and at high risk of problems.
New Jersey

Among all properties in New Jersey, 49% of them have a risk of extreme weather. The state uses very little renewable energy, and it has a good chance of damaging weather events.
