These 10 States Can Expect the Highest Electricity Bills in 2024

Many states can expect especially high electricity bills in 2024. Most states have had rate increases, and the price of electricity per kilowatt hour has gone up. Electricity usage is just one of the many costs that have been steadily increasing, causing a lot of stress to those on tight budgets.

These are the states that can expect the highest electricity bills in 2024.

Hawaii

According to a study from Texas Electricity Ratings,  Hawaii seems like the most expensive place because the air conditioner has to run virtually all the time. However, it’s actually because they have the highest cost of power per kilowatt-hour. Hawaii residents can expect to pay about $3,450 for electricity this year.

Maine

Maine has very high power bills, and this may be due to the need for running the heat around the clock during so much of the year. Maine residents will pay about $2,383 for power for the year.

Florida

In another air-conditioner-heavy state, Floridians can expect to pay quite a bit for their electricity. Throughout 2024, they can expect to pay about $2,367 for their electricity bill alone.

Connecticut is a wealthy state, so many of the homes are large and cost a lot to heat and cool. In this New England state, you can expect to pay about $2,362 for electricity for the year.

Rhode Island

The smallest state is big on electricity bills. The state has a high rate per kilowatt hour, creating one of the highest monthly bills in the country. Residents will pay an average of $2,361 for the year.

Maryland

Another state with a high price for kilowatt hours, this state comes in sixth for its annual electricity costs. Residents in the state can expect to pay about $2,265 for the year.

California

California has a very high cost of living, and that includes the electricity bill. With high rates for kilowatt hours, residents will pay an average of $2,196 for the year for their power bills.

Arizona

A combination of high air conditioning usage and high rates of electricity has led Arizona into one of the top spots. The cost of electricity for the year averages at about $2,190.

Nevada

Nevada has some extreme temperatures both in the summer and winter. It also has high prices for electricity for each kilowatt hour. Nevada residents will pay an average of $2,132 for the year.

Alabama

With temperature extremes in much of the state, it’s no wonder that the state has such high electricity bills, though its kilowatt hours aren’t particularly high. Alabamians will pay an average of $2,064 for electricity in 2024.
