Everyone needs to have adequate savings for emergencies and unexpected expenses. Some people save for larger goals like buying a house, and others just want an emergency fund. When you need to put some money away, it can be much easier to do so in some states.

Other states make it more difficult to have money to save. According to Forbes Advisor, these are the best and worst states to save money in.

The Best States for Saving Money

These states are the easiest places for saving money. The people there have good incomes, low debt, a low cost of living, plenty of housing, and lower taxes. All of these factors combine to make saving easier.

North Dakota

In North Dakota, the ratio of debt to income is low, and housing is very affordable. The people of this state pay the lowest percentage of their earnings on housing. They also rate well for the number of residents who can pay their monthly bills without difficulty.

South Dakota

It’s good to be in a Dakota. The state has a low cost of housing and a low percentage of renters who have to spend half of their incomes on rent. South Dakota also had the lowest percentage of residents who had food insecurity.

Kansas

In Kansas, the housing prices are low, and the level of debt per capita is low. It also has a lower cost of living, making it easier for people to save. It’s another state that enjoys a low level of food insecurity.

Missouri

Missouri has a low cost of living and low home prices. Its residents pay a relatively low percentage of their earnings on housing. It has low food insecurity, but it could do better when it comes to the number of people struggling to pay monthly bills.

Iowa

The Hawkeye State has a very low percentage of people’s earnings that go toward housing costs. It has a low cost of living and the people don’t have much debt when compared to other states.

These states have a convergence of factors that lead to the residents struggling to pay bills and make it harder to save any money. Many have a high cost of living and high housing prices.

California

In a surprise to nobody, this state leads the pack when it comes to having trouble saving. Californians pay a high percentage of their earnings on housing, and they have a hard time paying for their monthly expenses.

Hawaii

With the highest cost of living in all the states, buying everyday items can be painful. The state also has the second-highest income taxes, leaving people with less of their money overall.

Nevada

A higher percentage of renters in the Silver State pay more than half their income on rent. The cost of living here is high, and the people of Nevada have a high ratio of debt to income, making saving money tough.

With the highest income taxes in the country, Oregonians have less overall to save. They also contend with spending a high percentage of their money on their rent or mortgage.

With high debts and a high cost of living, Maryland isn’t a great place to save. Almost 10% of the residents have food insecurity, and many residents also have trouble paying their monthly bills.
