5 Au Natural & Zero Waste Cleaning Swaps Every Healthy Home Needs

Published:

Are you tired of the commercially produced chemical household cleaning products that smell (and are) toxic? If you’re looking for natural cleaning solutions similar to the ones that our grandparents and their grandparents used, then look no further!

We rarely stop to think about the harmful chemicals in the cleaning products we use, but maybe it’s time to do some digging. Most commercially produced cleaning products are loaded with dangerous chemicals that can wreak havoc on the health of our bodies and the environment.

Luckily, several alternatives have proven to be a lot safer. Here is a list of the best natural cleaners that you can use to keep your house spotless. As a bonus, they are also zero waste and a lot safer for you and your family.

Lemon

In case you didn’t know, your produce aisle contains one of the best natural cleaning alternatives out there. Lemon juice is a nifty cleaning agent when mixed with water due to its acidic content.

The juice can be used to remove hard water marks in the shower, and when the rinds are left to soak in hot water, the cooled lemon rind water is great for cleaning kitchen surfaces. As a bonus, the smell of lemon is really pleasant and will leave your home smelling fresh and zesty.

White Vinegar

Similar to lemon, white vinegar is also a highly acidic liquid that’s perfect for cleaning when diluted with water. It’s great for cleaning surfaces and will do a similar job to most spray cleaners.

If the smell is a little bit too pungent for you, then fear not because the smell won’t linger too long on surfaces, but you can always add a few drops of essential oil to remedy that if you feel the need to.

If you can’t manage to cut through coffee mug stains or greasy and grimy surfaces with vinegar, then baking soda should be able to save the day. Baking soda is a wonderful, naturally occurring substance that can pack in a punch like most harsh commercially based chemicals, and that’s because it’s such a strong base.

It has plenty of applications, including cleaning an oven and scrubbing a toilet, and it can even be used in place of bleach to remove nasty stains from your clothes.

Essential Oils

If you’re using air freshener sprays or dispensers in your home, then you may or may not know this, but these products are loaded with chemicals that may be detrimental to one’s health.

Essential oils diffusers can be a far better swap in this department, and the nice thing about them is that their smells are a lot more natural as opposed to the chemical smells coming from air fresheners.

Natural Fiber Cloth

Fibers of a natural origin such as cotton or bamboo are a much better alternative to microfibre cloths as they don’t release any microplastics into the environment. There are several options online, but you can also cut up an old t-shirt that you would otherwise have dumped in the trash.

One could say that bathrooms are equal parts utility and sanctuary. Essentially, they’re the place where you can light a candle and wind down from a long day, but at the same time, it’s the exact spot where most of your grooming and getting ready for your day (or bed) happens. In terms of aesthetics, we do want our bathrooms to feel welcoming and serene, but, at the same time, they need to be functional.
