15 States That Have Made the Most Racial Progress in the Country

Although an enormous amount of progress has been made toward racial integration in society since the Civil Rights Movement, there’s still work to be done. In some states, there has been more progress than in others.

WalletHub measured the differences between black and white people when it came to 22 different equality indicators. These include things like standardized test scores and the income of households. This allowed for a list of the states that have made the most racial progress in the country.

Hawaii

Hawaii has a total score of 75.72 for its high level of racial progress. It ranks first for the amount of social and civic engagement of various groups as well as ranking second for the equality of employment and wealth.

Arizona

Arizona ranks well across many indicators of equality, including education and health. It’s especially good with employment and wealth equality. It has an overall score of 73.86.

New Mexico

This state ranks second for both education equality and the levels of social and civic engagement of black and white people. It could do better with health equality, however. It has a score of 73.82.

Washington

Washington is close behind with 73.25. It has an especially high score for health equality, ranking the best in this measurement out of all the states. It also does well in employment, wealth, and education.

Kentucky

This state has come a long way, scoring very well for the levels of equality in both education and health. It could do better in social and civic engagement, though. Kentucky scores 72.75.

Alaska

Alaska ranks the highest of any state in its employment and wealth ranking. It also scores very well in social and civic engagement. It does however have a larger health gap. Its score is 71.16.

Delaware

This small state has been doing great in the equality of its employment and wealth and the social and civic engagement of both groups. However, its health gap is quite pronounced. It earned a 70.02.

Texas

Texas has done a great job of promoting equality, and that’s especially true for its education equality as well as wealth and employment. The Lone Star State earns a 69.65.

Georgia

Georgia scores very well for the employment and wealth equality of its residents. It also does well for education and social and civic engagement. The Peach State gets a 69.61.

Maryland

With its score of 69.15, Maryland has made a lot of progress and ranks very highly for its equality of employment and wealth. The state lacks equality in education, however.

Tennessee

Tennessee has done a lot to get its education system on more equal footing. It also does pretty well for its equality of employment and wealth. The Volunteer State scores a 67.43.

North Carolina

This state scores very well for its equality in social and civic engagement. However, it needs to bridge the wide gap that still exists for health between the two groups. It has a score of 66.54.

California

California ranks very highly for its equality in social and civic engagement, ranking seventh for this vital indicator. It isn’t great for the employment and wealth indicator, though. The state overall gets a score of 66.36.

West Virginia

Ranking third in education, it’s made an enormous amount of progress toward equalizing something that’s so essential. However, it’s not great with social and civic engagement equality. It gets a 65.91.

Virginia

Virginia scores well in both its social and civic engagement equality and for equality in employment and wealth. It’s a state that does need to worry about the health gap. It scores a 65.04.
