The 7 Most and the 7 Least Welcoming States

When you go to some states, people are highly welcoming and glad that you’re there. In others, well, you could come or go, and they’re not that concerned about it. The welcoming customers varied from place to place, and people were polled about how they liked to greet and welcome people.

Some areas, and not always the ones you’d expect, are just more welcoming. According to Preply, these are the states that are the most and least welcoming.

The Most Welcoming States

These states are the ones that get the highest scores for how well they welcome both other locals and newcomers to the area. The welcoming scores are out of 250.

Vermont

Vermont might not seem like the most welcoming state, but it does have the highest ranking out of all the states. The state is largely rural and has a small population, making people act in a more neighborly manner. It gets a welcoming score of 187.

Maine

Another state that has a lot of rural areas and not very many people, Maine is highly welcoming. People there love to meet people and greet them warmly when they visit the area. Its score is 178.

Hawaii

The welcoming nature of Hawaiians is often called the spirit of aloha. It’s the friendly spirit that pervades these islands and makes people happy to have visitors and new friends. It has a score of 177.

New Mexico

The people of the Land of Enchantment are warm and pleasant to newcomers. It’s not unusual for someone from New Mexico to greet you warmly with a handshake and a smile. They get a score of 176 for their highly welcoming ways.

Louisiana

Hospitality is second nature to someone from this beautiful land. It’s what brings people back to this state again and again to enjoy the warm welcome and the friendliness of locals. It gets a score of 175.

Mississippi

The Southern hospitality that this area is known for is still very much in force today. This state earns a score of 172 for the way its people greet and welcome people to the area.

Alaska

Alaska is pretty far from the South, but that doesn’t make it any less welcoming. The people of Alaska are as warm as the climate is cold. This far-northern state gets a score of 170.

The Least Welcoming States

These states have the very lowest scores on the welcoming habits of those who live there. When you visit these states, you may just get no welcome at all from the locals.

Missouri

As the Show-Me State, Missouri is used to not trusting others. The people there aren’t likely to be very welcoming when you roll into town. It gets the lowest score of all states with only a 37.

Massachusetts

People in Massachusetts get a bad rap from a lot of people, and that might come from not being very welcoming. The people there are more likely to keep to themselves than go out of their way to greet you. Their score is 54.

Illinois

Don’t expect people to greet you warmly in Illinois. The state has several large population centers, and these aren’t places that are typically very warm. Illinois gets a score of 66.

Pennsylvania

A score of 69 shows how little hospitality people can expect when in Pennsylvania. It isn’t a place that’s known for the warmth of its people or enthusiastic greetings.

New York

New York is known for its fast pace of life and the disinterest of the people passing by. With such a large population, most people don’t take the time to be welcoming. The state gets a score of 81.

Kansas

This may be a surprise to some, as the people of the Midwest are said to be very inviting. This isn’t the case in Kansas. With a score of just 82, don’t expect much of a welcome here.

South Dakota

Though the population is largely rural, the people in South Dakota just aren’t all that into you. The people there get a score of 86 for their lack of warmth and hospitality.

Some states have a high population density and many population centers. Others are mostly rural and may have little population. The difference between the top and bottom states in terms of population is enormous.

Some states are safer than others, and this is a big influence on where people move. Places with a low level of public safety have a lot of crime, and this can prevent the public from wanting to move there and even visit.

There are various types of crime, with violent crime and property crime being highly important to the public safety rating of each state.
